I was thinking about using some DOW dwarfs in my empire army.
I have a rare slot free and about 130pts to use.
I was kinda thinking of a back-up combat unit. Also one I could put on a flank and hopefully rely on to hold up flankers a bit.
My only concern is there low movement, but the rest is good.
Plus is fluffly to do with the man/dwarf alliance thing!
Anyone else use them or reckon they're worth it?
Well, they're not bad (bringing higher toughness and leadership in your army is always a nice thing) and if your tactics revolve around waiting for the enemy rather than bringing the combat to him they are definitely useful (and it mitigates their lower movement when you expect them not to move too much anyways )
However, they do have about three drawbacks:
1.) with your free points the unit will number from about 12 (if you upgrade them with hvy armor & shield and give them a standard and musician) to 16 (just shields and light armor, no command at all)
Whilst that's fine for flank protection, it's a bit risky if your enemy comes with a somewhat serious charge (heavy cavalry, cheap horde units like skaven slaves or goblins or anything supported by a character) unless you have a BSB close by
2.) you'd get much more imperial troops for their cost (either a small unit with detachment or a really large block) or even a small knightly order (which would be more versatile as flank protector due to it's higher movement)
3.) as you already mentioned it, they take up a rare slot where the empire now has more choices (unlike the old armybook where flagellants were limited to 0-1 and the rest had to be hellblaster guns if you didn't want to take DoWs )
But if you wanna go fluff, just do it :drinking:
It ain't easy bein' green... :-)
Remember however that DoW dwarves can have crossbows. Crossbows + heavy armour+ shields make a pretty damn versatile unit :C
then again... they would be costing an arm and a leg. not sure if you could get a unit of 10 for 130 points...
spambot kill tally: 79
[16:19] <@Alzer> Arky's right though
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> Sometimes it's intentional.
[00:01] <+zubus> i love you, ya skirt wearin nothern monkey! ^_^
I think you can just get 10 dwarfs with heavy armour and crossbows for 130pts, but they cost 13pts each! That's to much!
I was thinking as just using them as flank protectors:
15 dwarfs(light arm & hw)+shields+musician=130
I think they could do well at re-buffing flank threats and charges, it's there movement value that really concerns me.
Tis true, for the same points I can have 5 knights+Musician.
Am going to play test a cheap block of spearmen in that role tomorrow, will see how they do I hate having spare points, they always seem so hard to use well!
A better option for some auxillary combat support would be to get yourself some ogres. They are fairly fast, resilient and good in combat.
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares, your a mile away and you have his shoes!!

Tried out some ogre mercs yesterday, they were good, me like!
