I have been tinkering with various Empire list varients lately, choosing a variety of different army methods.
I have been trying out different angles on the Empire General.
I have tried various stances from the lowly hero to save points, the General of the Empire with mundane items for cheap leadership hike, right up to Kurt Helborg in unit of knights for that expensive, but decisive surgical strike.
As we all know Warhammer has been developed this time around to revolve around units winning the game.
With this being the case i would like to hear players opinios on what kind of general you would usually take.
Big, expensive killer at the cost of an extra unit or two or cheap value for points leadership hiker with more troops or of course somewhere in between (Arch lector for example)?
In my opinion, Warrior Priests and Arch Lectors give you the most bang for your buck. They give you the extra DD, decent CC ablitiy, and really nice group buffs and bound spells. That, and they are arguably the most kick ass characters in Warhammer.
Warrior Priests are probably the best heroes in the game. Why? Because they not only have pretty effective CC abilities, but they also enhance your troops so much it simply isn't funny. If that isn't enough, they also have a relatively low price tag.
As for power, I'm interested to see how a Templar Grand Master would perform leading an army. I think he'd add a real punch to a unit of Knights.
The warrior priests are definately the way to go.has been developed this time around to revolve around units winning the game.
A priest adds about as much (possibly a bit more) punch to a unit of knights than a templar grandmaster does along with many more benefits of course. Its also better to have your attacks spread out than all in one character.
Priests just outperform all the other characters.
1. Generate dispel dice
2. Have bound spells
3. Add leadership
4. Provide combat benefit to unit
5. Decent at close combat.
They are just too good IMO. Why take a captain when a warrior priest is better?
problem is, that comparatively, Empire has no killer characters. In fact, they have reduced the effectiveness of most of the units in the army with 7th edition (no cav hammers, no T4 on the flaggelants, etc) your general only has 3 attacks. So easily, the arch lector is ridiculously cheap for what he does. The VHS gives you incredible power against anybody else's character. War Alter is even more ridiculous for what it does vs. price. This is why almost all tourny empire armies have a AL Walter combo. Grand Templar Master is pretty good, but you almost have to take him with Empire Knights who aren't as good either as they were in 7th.
I agree with what has been said already, the Arch lec is the best choice in my opinion. He's not a great fighter, but then none of the empire characters are, as has been mentioned.
The beauty of the arch lec/warrior priest is how he benefits the whole army SO much more. Skarsgard covered all the points. I just don't see why you would want to take a normal general.
As for expensive or cost-effective, I believe cost effective is best. What's the point in loading up an already AVERAGE fighter, taking away from the rest of the army.
I'm coming to believe that the empire characters are there more to support thier troops, not be massive killing machines.
Just my opinion
I am a little confused on one point.
Most of your are citing the Arch lectors ability to buff your troop choices, mainly by providing hatred.
I agree with this.
However it has also been suggested in this thread that almost all empire tournament armies take the Arch lector on the war alter.
Does this not remove the usefulness of having him in the unit to buff their abilities?
True but they take warrior priest for the units and have the Arch Lector running around on the Alter causing problems.
I personally use my AL on foot with a unit of Swordsmen. It's a fair bit cheaper but doesn't have all the funky abilities of the Alter.
AL / WP are expensive options and for waaaaaayy fewer points I field 60-point captains with a 2+ save and WS 5 that do great leading my infantry. My General of the Empire is 145 with a 2+ save and Rod of Command to help hold the line.
Sure you can get lots of bells and whistles magic and dispel, blah blah, but you also sacrifice your ability to not be baited by the enemy. All they have to do if charge a unit with the warrior priest in it the hatred will make the priest's unit pursue no matter what and then your state troops will be surrounded and broken as they leave the battle line.
However if you liek to just kill things and hope your enemy daesn't have common sense then WP will do just fine.
