allthough I am mainly a TK player, I also have an army of Empire. I got an upcoming match soon, against Vampire counts. I've never actually seen a VC player in a match before and know very little about tactics against them and how they play. My opponent will be playing with the Sylvanian levy army list in a 3k match.
Plz give me some help
what's the sylvanian levy list? Is that in the VC book?
Most of the VC armies I have seen come down to a couple of things, a really nasty big lord, and 3 necromancers. Their magic is big and bad and they can grow more skeletons faster than you can kill them. The other lists I have seen are fast moving wolf/bat form armies with black knights and maybe a coach.
In empire (especially vs. VC) you can't go wrong with an Arch lector with VHS and a war wagon. They don't have anything to kill it and it can throw 3 bound spells, all of which are extra nasty against undead) Just make sure you take it against the big unit with the nasty lord level guy.
You'll need something to take out his mages and warmachine killers (fell bats and dire Wolves) Pistoliers are good and some shooting and magic of your own)
Captain on a pegasus with a magic weapon and maybe the doomfire ring to take out banshees
Helstorm Rocket Launcher would be nice too (maybe 2).
The Sylvanian levy is an army list from the Storm of Chaos. Von Casterien are the only vamps he will have. The list is on the GW website so you may want to check it out. His objective will be to bog you down with tarpit skeleton units while flank charging with wolves, bats, cavalry and Black Coaches (In a Sylvanian Levy list he can have two). Go for his general early if you can to cause crumble tests. You can also expect Levy units popping from all over on the board and not just from casting.
I'd take 1 cannon, 2 at most, to deal with the chariots (coaches), and if you want more damage, either a mortar or a helblaster (preferably the helblaster). There's no point sinking too many points into artillery for your shooting phase, considering that it's a horde army, you need coverage.
The priest is a good idea, espcially with VHS. Nasty trick there.
The bad thing is that he WILL tarpit you with the skeletons. I'd use decent units that you are willing to sacrifice to that tarpit, in hopes that you can use the rest of your army to fight around the pit. I'd take spearmen, with detachments of Free Company, and a detachment of 5 gunners. That way you get a little stand and shoot, then a tasty flank charge to negate that bonus, a banner to negate that bonus, and the spears maximize attacks, leaving you with a good number of enemy kills. This should help you stick around if your general is nearby.
Beyond that, you need to defend your flanks, and the best defense is a good offense. I'd hammer him with units of knights, maybe just 6 man units. Pistoliers and Knights would make a good counter attack- the plan being to wipe out his flanking force and then sweep in to knock out his magicians and cripple him entirely. His expensive units will be the ones flanking, and they can't be ressurected: that's where the VP's are.
