I've been studying a load of English history on the 16th Century recently and have reached an epiphany. And that is that the Empire are based on the armies of said period. 8X Now you might be asking "where is this idiot getting at ?" but here is your answer. I am thinking of starting an Empire army themed around a 16th Century monarch but can't decide which, or whether there is a model that might represent him.
So far I have found that the Mad Lector of Averland looks surprisingly much like Henry VII, but was wondering what other people had to say on this matter.
there were several Swedish Kings in or around that area that were basically warlords. They invaded and controlled several areas in and around the baltic sea for years. They would make a nice transition into the WHFB world.
IIRC, the Empire is based on Germany during the Renaissance (sp?) under the reing of Emperor whathisface 9the name leaves me now). So, yes, similar time frame, just a slightly different place (a clues also in the names: Franz, Ludwig etc).
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

The Dutch Legion
I was planning on basing an empire army on the english civil war (16th century) as well, matching uniform colours etc, however I then realised that other than the cavalry it'd be too similar to my dwarves and decided not to.
aut viam inveniam aut faciam / I'll either find a way or make one.
Yuck, Cromwell. My army is themed on one of his less-than-stellar exploits: The United Irishmen. The army is a blast, lots of Freecompany "whiteboys" and spear-armed peasants. They have a few guns, and some cannon (more for the sake of being competetive- although the UI had limited acess to both). I love my army.
But it is true, and- no offence- it took you THAT long to come to the conclusion that they are Ren. inspired? They are supposed to be germanic, as already stated, so just look into any of the minor kings of the pre-german city-states. Prussia is just on the cusp of being too advanced. But with musketry as a core choice, there's no reason you couldn't make an army as late as the American or Revolutions.
I will also say that I intend no offence by this, but I thought it was quite obvious that they were inspired by 16th century forces. The Holy Roman Empire to be precise, which was a large realm covering modern day Germany (and had nothing to do with Rome despite the name). The similarities are all there. The Holy Roman Emperor was chosen by the Electors, who each ruled their own province, just like in the warhammer Empire. Even the name of the WH realm is just a shortened version of the historical one.
As for basing an Empire army around a real historical ruler you could probably use any european ruler of the period. Although the Empire is based on the Germanic region most armies of the time were quite similar.
Thou shalt remember:
Warhammer Fantasy armies do NOT have Codices. They have Army Books.
