The new state troops box allows you to build spearmen / haliberdiers / and swordsmen. The models hold their spears with 2 hands but in the book I can upgrade them to hold shields. Do spearmen with shields still attack in 2 ranks? How would you guys represent spearmen with shields? Customize the models to hold a spear / shield or just tell the other player that they are holding a shield even though the model isnt. Thanks for the help =)
You could just attatch the shields to the Spearmens backs, or have them laying on the model base or equip them on the arms / forearms of the soldiers like bucklers.
As for fighting, spearmen will still fight in 2 ranks even with shields equipped yes.
Spears are 1 handed, despite them being modelled as 2 strangely.
The flamey one is indeed correct.
The most common way to put shields on spearmen is on the forearm.
They get a 5+ save for having Light armour, shields and spears, but a 4+ for using sword and shield. Just thought I'd clarify that.
The way I place my shields is on their forearms on slung on their backs. It promotes variety and loks as though tehy would actually do that.
Thanks for the suggestions =) Swordsmen get 4+ save? Light armor / shield and a sword? I dont remember seeing that.
In close combat only, HW/S gives you a bonus 'parry' save
Thats good to know thanks
The parry save is why swordsmen are generally considered the better choice. I always thought it was fluffy to have a healthy mix, though.
Spearmen can do it as well, and they can choose whether to use spears (for lots of lovely wounds) or Hw/s combo (for precious few wounds). Just remember that you have to pick one and stick with it for the whole combat.
