my friend and i got in an argument. which is better. a skaven ratling gun or an empire hellblaster volley gun? Not points wise, but which is better in a battle? Thanks
I can remember seeing and playing in countless games where a lone hellblaster held an entire flank, the enemy simply avoided the 24" kill zone it created. Ive seen it take out 10 cold one knights,an entire beastherd, countless skirmishers, etc. The most ive seen ratlings do is get off maybe 10 shots max and then blow up. And,well, their only S3 hits anyways. So its really no contest IMO
A ratlinggun is S4 with -2 armour saves. They are good, no doubt, and count as a corechoice following a clanrat regiment. With the be able to shoot into other regiments in combat rule it rocks.
Ratling Gun. Its cheaper and is really really annoying. The amount of times it rips thorugh combat killing half my guys but not touching is clanrat unit is amn annoying.
I was also stupid enough to leave my Knights in its shooting arc - 8 knights disappeared.
The Helblaster is great - don't get me wrong. Its just I misfire waaaaaaay too much.
Hm,i dont know how my friend mistakes S4 AP for S3 Anyways, the ratling is ok,but for one, they count count as core per say,you cant have 3 ratling guns and no other troops. I still say the hellblaster is more deadly, ive heard very few people complaining about how powerful ratlings are compared to the constant complains from my opponents for fielding 2 hellblasters. If a ratling gun fires 3 times, theres a 1/2 chance it will misfire. A hellblaster has a 1/3 chance of misfiring. The ratling,i beleive,is also more likely to blow up or something else very nasty, compared to the hellblaster, where if you roll a 5-6 your pretty well off. Also, assuming the ratling fires 3 times, there is a max of 15 shots. Not 18,mind you, because 2 6's or 5's would make it misfire. The hellblaster at a mere 6" less range gets twice that number of shots at +1 strength. Personally, ive had a hellblaster blow up on me twice. Nearly every game by comparison,it has destroyed or crippled atleast 1 enemy unit.
As for leaving knights out in the open,it sounds like your opponent was extremely lucky if he killed 8 with 1 ratling. You get a 4+ save, they wound on 3's,meaning statisticly you would have to fire 24 shots to kill 8 2+ save knights. Also,i'd like to point out that the ratlings ability to fire into combat is an army ability, not that of the model. By the same logic my cannon is better than a dwarves because i can buy an engineer for it(multiple wounds aside).
Thats a joke, right? You need to face some Clan Skryre "themed" Skaven lists... 12x20 Clanrats with Ratling Guns will be quite the thorn in your side... Id say, the 60pt ratling gun is alot more of a concern than the hellblaster. I only use 2 ratling guns in my army and my Bret friend hates them more than anything.ive heard very few people complaining about how powerful ratlings are compared to the constant complains from my opponents for fielding 2 hellblasters
Both are hard hitting super guns. The helblaster has more potential, but the cost of a Ratling gun make then very decent.
Never drink more than 2 Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters unless you are a thirty-ton Mega Elephant with brocal pheomonia!
I think a hellblaster is better only at short range because you only get 1/2 hits at long lange at S4 -2 to AS. I had a hellblaster take out a swordmaster unit
I've never played against Skaven but I'm going to go with my instincts and pick the hellblaster. According to GW its the number 2 one-hit wonder and the ratling gun isn't even on the list. In my experience I've played many battles with my hellblaster, I never make a list without it. Heres what I've gone with it.
Eploded: 3 or so times (not bad, once it was extremely bad timing)
Eploded: I mean the good explosions, maybe its just me but most times that I've misfired I've anniahlated. I can remember the first time I opened fire with my newly painted toy. I was displeased with a misfire at close range but when that 6 came rolling along I started jumping with joy and my opponent cringed as his unit of boar boys dissapeared.
And in times when I just get regular shots off I destroy half of units of knights, along with whole units of infantry still. To me, jsut the fear that a Volley gun instills in your opponent makes them worth the points. Mine goes in the centre of my army, This usually makes my opponent split his forces unless he wants to charge down the lain of death.
Either way you do the math, it all adds up to you goin' down
A good magic missile should do the trick against hellblasters though.
I think that ratling guns are better. They can be placed near units so that they may not be targeted, they are cheap, and do not take up any rare/special choice.
EDIT: looks like I poster in this thread a while back
