i need help with choosing magic lores for my wizard/wizards. Can u help me?
my style of play is defencive for the most part. In my army list at the moment i have a grey (shadow) wizard (lv.2) armed with van horstmanns speculum and the sword of might. Is it worth him being lv.2, should he only be lv.1? THe other wizard uses lore of light(lv.2) he is armed with a dispel scroll and the wizards staff.
My tactic was on the first turn fly the grey wizard into cover or a building using shadow steed. while the light wizard prouds the enemy with magic missles. Turn 2, if the grey wizard is within range of using shadow steed again to get into combat with the opponents leader or high ranking hero/lord he will charge and use the speculum and sword to hopfully either slay or mortaly wound his opponent. This will also either slip up the army or halt it for my other wizard, handgunners and artillery to blow the enemies brains out!
Is this a good tactic? And am i using the right lores?:ninja2:
the reason why i gave will the sword of might is because i will need 4's to hit and 4's to wound i will be luck to score a wound, while with the sword of might i can inflict more wounds.
Why would you want your wizard in combat, a General, Captain, Arch Lector and Warrior priests is cheaper and better in combat. They all can use the sword of might and the Van Horstmann's Speculum much better than a wizard. If I ever played again an empire wizard(in a unit) that charged a unit of mine I would suspect them he has the speculum and I won't challange also if the wizards issued a chalange i would accept with my unit champion.
I think it is a real waste. The wizard would keep one of my units busy for one round and then he will be dead. If he charges my unit with my lord in, he will face atleast 20 men so combat res, +1 outnumber, +6 ranks(griffin banner), +1 Stardard, +1 Battle Standard. The wizard will have +1 for a wound(left say the wizard kills my champion), that would be an autobreak unless you can roll a double 1. Also it would be great for me one round that non of your warmachines and gunners can shoot at that unit.

so is it still worth using the lore of shadow with him(he has a very cool converted model)?
or shhould i replace him with a warrior priest or captain?
is the lore of ligt still a good choice for my other wizard?
Using them as spellcasters are worth it. You can still add a captain or warrior priest if you want. The lore depends on you. Both light and shadow are not bad. I like using diffrent lores, also depends on what army i'm facing.
If you want to use lore of shadow use it.
Your wizard, if he has Van Horstman's, will only need 4's to hit and wound if he is fighting a General with crappy WS 3 and T 3, like the wizard. Otherwise, he will have the other opponents WS, BS etc and the other general will be fighting back with one weak, lousy attack.

thats right. thanks. but is it worth the points?
Whether or not it is worth the points, really depends on the rest of your list. The short answer is Yes. The speculum is a great item and generally speaking it is worth the points. Other things to consider are:
1- do you have any dispel scrolls? If not, you might want a 2nd wizard for that purpose
2- can you give it to another hero instead of the wiz? A priest works well. It only has 2 attacks, but it definitely a better fighter than a wizard
I would suggest putting the wiz in a block of troops to protect him once the challenge is over. Otherwise he will probably die after the challenge. Of course if you are sacrificing a 150 point model to kill a 200-300 point model, it may well be worth it!
