I have a unit of 20 state troops that i can't decide what weaponry to give them! It thaught that swords were out because i already have a unit. So it is between spears and halberds, can u help me?
My style of play is quite defence, but that depends on the army
Halberds are two handed weapons and so cant be used with a shield though halberdiers with shields fare better against shooting and you may opt to go Hand weapon and shield for an extra +1 save in CC.
Spears can be used in 1 hand so you can fight in 2 ranks with shields with a better save than Halberdiers using their trademark weapon.
Spearmen tend to be used in large blocks accompanied with a smaller detachment of halberdiers and would soak up more beating than if you juxtapose the two unit types, though the point values would`nt change all that much.
Meine zwei cents,danke.
Spears are great defensive unit. Large number of attacks, give them a warrior priest and they can re-roll them as well, nice!
Giving halberiers shields is a waste, it's not protection enough to merit the points, and letting them use hand weapons with shields makes them more expensive than swordsmen, but with a crappier weapon skill.
thanks for posting i think i will opt for spears
really, you should make them swordsmen. Spears and halberds are both pretty horrible.
i already have a unit of swords an d want some varity
I really don't like to play defensively and really that is what the spearmen are about, to take the hit so they get the bonus attacks. But I find that so much BASIC stuff out there kills and nullifies that out, then it really isn't worth taking it. I would opt to go for the haliberders because of two reasons: 1) Having a "good" armour save against shooting isn't so important because your going to have a big block of them anyway so it wont cause panic most of the time and slot of stuff out there is negating armour to nothing anyway 2) Str 4 is huge not only for the better roll to wound but also the armour save, making a 5+ is alot harder than a 4+.
Personally, I am a fan of Swordsmen all around, despite what the fluff says! For a point more, you get a higher WS, higher I and higher armor save. Quite a bargain if you ask me. So I like to run blocks of those guys with dets of haliberders, just so that I got my bases covered.
