Hey there folks.
I was wondering what's your opinion on making an army that uses Knights as its core choices and makes extensive use of Greatswords (2 or more regiment)
Reason being that I wanted to make a Talabecland army, of which are famous for smaller armies consisting of elite troops. In addition, I just think the Empire Greatswords and Knights look pretty awesome, and I'm not a fan of the look of the incredibly useful swordsmen.
Off the top of my head for 2k points it would consist of 3 blocks of knights, 4 blocks of Greatswords and their detachments (If any) and finally to make up for the lack of artillery, a Helblaster and Helstorm. The General'd be a Templar Grand Master, and a standard bearer with a couple of wizards would take up my heroes slot.
Think this would work or not? Yay or nay?
I have run a similar army, but the theme was the Reiksguard.
I have a lot of the old Foot Knight models from a couple of editions ago which are HW, FP and shield on foot, but I just use them as Swordsmen for the Greatsword detachments.
I found that lack of missile fire was an issue - more because of flyers than anything else. I did find that taking the Imperial Banner (expensive) helped this army a lot.
imo it would work initially, but then once your opponent gets wind of what you're doing, it will become very easy to beat.
As a WE General, I'd field a WW Hero w/- Arcane Bodkins. He'd get in behind your Knights, pick them off at leisure, and leave your Greatswords isolated. If I were an O&G player, I'd take tons of Night Gobbos loaded with Fanatics. Your Knights charge in and their armour gets dyed red. The GSs would meet a similar fate. For pretty much anyone else, I'd take a block of DoW Pikemen and so on and so forth.
It would be very easy to tailor a force to beat this, so I wouldn't make a habit of using it, but when you use it, it would be a great force to use.
It tends to be a one trick pony, which will suffer against a balanced list. What would you do for magic defence for instance?

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Nice idea Sayomi Akimoto.
Personally i think thats going a bit too far.
Id prefer to use:
20-25 Greatswords + detachments/characters, etc. (Elite)
8-10 Inner Circle Knights (Elite)
6-7 Knights (as core choice) - mainly used for flanks.
Helblaster (Elite War Machine, since it is rare thus uncommon).
Pistoliers / Outriders (Elite)
+ support fire from X-bows / H-guns and perhaps a solid block (or 2) of State Troops like swordsmen or spearmen.
Depends on your character type i guess, but i dont have enough GS for 4 units yet lol.
Well thats my 2cents nonetheless.
But ultimately, you wont know till you play it and field-test it.
You know, I have heard of an idea like this from the store manager at the GW I go to. He though that he would use something like three units of Great Swords with dets, Knights on the flanks and warrior priests all around. It sounded like a good list to me because it forced the opponent to deal w/ their flanks or deal w/ the center blocks and either way, it would be tough. Personally, I have tried to do CC lists w/ Empire and haven't much luck (mind you I was using mostly flagellants and swordsmen so that might of been my problem). This, however, made me see the importance of long ranged troops and their job being not to outright destroy an enemy or even force panic tests but to wear them down enough were they start losing rank bonuses and I easily outnumber them and that is how I win. I say you should try it, tweak it and tell us, cause I am a CC guy to and I would also like some help in this field.
On a side note Akimoto, where did you get that banner pic? It is AMAZING! I wants it!
Well, I've already made such a list in the army list section, if someone would be so kind as to comment on it.
As for the banner, I got it from the internet. I'm afraid that's all I know.
