I just had a sneaky thought. I'm new to Empire so I'm not sure if this is a strategy that is used frequently, but I hope that by posting this I'm bringing something new to Empire players.
Ok. so here's the idea
Equip a lvl 1 mage with Van Horstmanns's Speculum and a Power Stone (115 pts)
Take the lore of Beasts and "The Bears Anger"
Send him into combat against a Vampire or Demon or something, swap stats, and then use the power stone to cast Bears Anger (so it doesn't get dispelled as easily)
against a Vampire(hero) this puny lvl 1 mage now has WS6 S7 I6 and 5 attacks! compared to the Vampires (now) average stat line.
I tied this against Archaons Horde once, instead of the power Stone though, iIgave him the Sword of Justice. I also gave him the Lore of Shadows, and the default spell.
I also gave a Captain the Ring of Volans.
He gets Turn 1.
Archaon and his Swords of Chaos move right up the board.
I draw out several DD, and successfully get the Steed of Shdaows off.
I delcare a charge against Archaon.
My Wizard fails his Fear test.
Just so typical that an awesome plan like that gets screwed up by some dice deciding that they'll play a practical joke The VHS is a nasty little toy, especially against characters that rely on their statline, like Saurus characters, Orcs, Chaos, Ogres etc.
Well the VHS has always been a pain for any chaos/vampire/orc player, but i see it more often used on 4th lvl wizard generals, just to avoid any harm to them.
Nice idea though, to have a cc oriented mage, pretty like the beast shaman with chaos armour and goretooth.
It's better, it's shiny, it's warped...it's Chaos.
I've always thought about using that set-up but wouldn't the bonuses from the beast spell since it adds on to the mage's stats be transfered to the person he's challenging?
You're right, they would be.
When the Wizard casts off, he gets the boost to his statline immediately.
i also equip one of my 2 wizards with vhs only i put mine in a unit of spears and wait to be charged and then declare a challenge with the wizard people normally know what's up so i am wondering what the longevity of this ploy is?
I always try my chances at getting the flaming sword of ruin with a lvl 2 since that wouldn't be transfered to the person your wizards fighting.

I've heard of this before and frankly, it is a one trick pony. You do it once to a person who is unfamiliar with Empire, they learn from it and then always know what you are doing when you say, "I challenge w/ my wizard." However, I feel that it makes amazing potential for a defensive unit. Take this for example:
2 Detachments of 9 swordsmen arranged in a 3x3
Captain BSB with Griffion Standard
Wizard (of any type) w/ VHS and Sigil of Sigmar
So w/o the wizard, this is a super nasty formation since is static combat resolution 9 (13 if you get the flank w/ a detachment) before wounds which shouldn't be that hard w/ that many attacks. But problem is how do you protect your captain? Sure you can throw him on the left side and so only 2 regular guys can hit him but there are those pesky challenges. By throwing in a Wizard, you protect your captain who is key to that uber combat res by accepting the challenge, it becomes likely that it will wound or kill the challenging model and keep them from challenging and you aren't being overly open about that wizards ability so that he will become a prime target. Additionally, you get the benefit of magic resistance and if you take lore of beasts, you can cast it on the captain and make him super strong!
That's the thing. Once someone has a bad experience with the VHS, you caan have all kinds of lovely psychological uses for it.
Yeah it was kinda funny when I first got my empire I was talking alot about how much fun it would be to use the VHS with my wizard that when we played he avoided my mage for most of the game thinking I had it on it though I took a different set-up
