Just want to start off saying this is my first post as "Emysk." I used to be a frequent speaker here a few years back but the something happened with the site I think? Not entirely sure what happened but my account's gone. Oh well.
My reason for this post is to ask you all to convince me to starting up an Empire army. I currently have a large force of Lizardmen, maybe 3000 pts give or take. I'm the only lizzie player in my area and love it, but I kinda want to start a new army and Empire seem to have caught my eye, but why? Is it there long range? Is it there ability to adjust to many different armies? Or do I just like the idea that I can do more with the models?
For Lizardmen I like their strengths, special abilities, and heroes, but I don't like their short range and frankly the saurus have limited model looks.
Just tell me why I should should start up an Empire army instead of just keeping with Lizardmen.
Interesting, what was your old account name? We may be able to dig it up.
Empire are probably one of the most customisable armies in fantasy, they have a bit of everything available to them, and can specialise if you want (just please don't do a gunline lol)
Empire has a lot going for it, the army list is long and varied and can be tailored to fit multiple play styles. The model range is very extensive, and when you take into account stuff like the mordheim range and the abundance of plastics you can make really unique looking forces with the minimum of converting skill, so you can let your imagination run wild!
I personally like to have my various armies compliment each other, and Empire/Lizzies instantly brings to mind a lot of conquistador/Aztec type matchups.
PLAN CLAN MAN!!
He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man- S. Johnson
The Empire are the only army that can get machine-guns!
Lots of well trained grunts, more than capable of beating down these heretical Lizards with commonplace household items. Nothing is generally regarded as obscenely overpriced in our arsenal either. Other than that, I see very little I can add regarding the Empire itself.
So, to bring you to the joyous light of having 2 armies. If your opponent ever catches your number, you can simply find another one. Having 2 armies affords you great diversity. You like painting? The potential for 2 different colour schemes is an appeal to most. Or you like gaming? The 2 armies have very different tactics, and, as said before, the diversity afforded will be simply invaluable.
The Empire have the following units/rules that make them an exceptionally customisable and adaptable force:
Heavy cavalry as Core - really only the Bretonnians can say that with any conviction!
Detachments rules - Empire detachments are a pain in the neck, they allow big blocks of average soldiery to stand and shoot quite cheaply with muskets or crossbows
Pistoliers + outriders - amongst the best "light" cavalry in the game, purely from the perspective of the number of S4 armour piercing shots that get fired, very very annoying, especillay against elite troops with small units (the AP rule is a killer - pistols and guns have an additional -1 to armour save)
Great Cannon - lovely S10 D6 wound-causing goodness
Helblaster Volley Gun - the cavalcade of death is possibly a little toned down to the first time I encountered it (a good 2 editions ago), but is is by far and away the scariest flank securing units around
Helstorm rocket battery - a new addition to the Empire armoury, erratic, but fun to use
The Steam Tank - metal death - need I say more?
I love the whole feel of the newest Empire army incarnation, it's gritty and has a lot of good things going for it. However, I will never abandon my High Elves for some "men" :-)
Funny i started off with lizards and have around 4,000 pts and have recently started Empire. With Empire you got Wizards capable of choosing single lores other than heaven is a plus although not a slann they are still effective and not as big a point sink. If you wanted range this is the one to go with, handgunners, snipers and artillery are destructive plus the only army to have a Tank. And then you have the great detachment system and a variety of good special characters and hero choices.
As for the variety you have a large selection of forces in each category and there are several groups within the empire to customize and paint your forces. Heck Empire is one of the must versatile armies in warhammer.
empire is the most versatile army in the game. I played only empire for about 8 years and am still finding new ways to play them. You can run any kind of list you want: fast (plenty of cav ranging from light pistoliers to heavy 1+ armor save knights) tank, war altar, etc, infantry (detachment rules are amazing for infantry armies, empire infantry isn't boring, its subtle and can be very rewarding), gunline (second only to dwarves), magicky, but the most fun is trying to combine all these into a balanced list that can compete equally in all phases of the game. The characters are a lot of fun, core is expansive, special choices are awesome (cannons, elite infantry, elite cavalry, pistoliers, mortars), rare choices include the helblaster!! and the infamous steam tank, as well as flaggellants, a really cool unit. I personall take a giant as a rare choice as well. The magic item list includes some extremely powerful stuff, but, more importantly, alot of subtle stuff that works well in combinations, not only with other tiems, but in various units and army lists. All in all, its a great army to play, can be competitive, but is also really fun, I highly recommend it.
Okay so far everything everyone said is why I've been liking Empire lately. I do like the models alot too, because lizardmen are cool, everyone I talk to agree, but as an actual player, they are so static. Saurus are all unified, but I guess it goes with their background. Personally I love moddeling and painting and soon will have some pictures up hopefully of some Space Marines I've just started to paint but lizzies are soooooo bland after a while.
If anyone has any last bit arguements to pinch me I'd love them. I want someone if they can to take my current lizzardmen army into an account and argue why I should go with Empire too. *Sorta like Sir Theobold the Lame said*
p.s. my old acount I believe was something like, "FlatFoot"? I used to use that alot but don't worry about it. Thanks! =]
i play empire and the reason i like them, and why you should play them is thier mass amount of versatile infantry. sure the army itslef is versatile. but look at the infantry. want the skill of an elf (or at least as close as a man can get to elven skills) look the the heavy block of swords, want to wound chaos and other T4 enemies look the the moght of the average halberdier, the spear is also nice as it is the perfect shock absorbing parent unit for the ever 'increasinlgy annoying opponent nusiance' or the detachment system. like to shoot alot. range or power? that leaves the musket ot crossbow, want menuverabilty, look the lowly archer, or the huntsmen. then theres the bravery, skill, and power of the Greatswords, a great infantry unit. The plethora of infantry choices just makes your head spin doesnt it? and you can tailor the army to any strategy. The cavalry aint bad either.
Guns kill, but pens are just as effective. Never thought of that have you?
So if I do start playing, I would assume that the battalion box is a good bet?
