What do you guys consider is the best combo of items and magic for an AL on waltar? I'm playing 2000 points mostly.
To date I've gone with A of meteoric Iron & random magic sword, but I'm concerned I'm wasting the 2+ additional save that the waltar gives me. dawn armour & shield may be better?
I also tend to go with a Lvl 2 wiz, BSB & warrior priest.
All advice welcome...
Just an FYI, the bonus 2 armor save you get from being in a chariot only applies against shooting. Thats why AoMI is highly recommended if your W. Altar is getting into close combat in any way. I was confused by this as well, thankfully this thread set me straight.
Personally, I go AoMI, VHS, and either Sword of Might or Power. I think the ASF is a waste of points because VHS is already giving them I=4 (lower than almost everyone), so you are only benefitting if you get charged or against someone else who is ASF, and in those cases, you are tough enough to withstand it.
I also hear that giving them the Mace of Helsturm was also a powerful combination, because remember you have hatred, so it gives you a fairly good chance of hitting, combined with the d6 wounds from that and the impact hits....yeah, character killer.
I run mine at a slim 286 Pts. Arch Lector, War Altar, VHS, AoMI, Great Weapon. If I have the points, Sword of Might. Mace of Helstrum is sweet, but you can't take it, VHS, and AoMI.
Another cool build is VHS, Gorgon Shield, Heavy Armor, Sword of Power. The only problem is he only has a 4+ armor save (2+ from shooting), but the opponent only has 1 attack, and AL can heal himself multiple ways. This build reduces the effectiveness of the enemy even further (especially important if they have a crazy magic weapon, so they get 1 less atack with it) while increasing offensive capability with the Sword of Power, but it's a little to pricy for me.
I've started taking my AL in a unit, people find it less cheesy and it has alot of advantages.
I'm practicing for this years UK GT and at current I run the AL on a Pope Mobile with AoMI, VHS & Sword of Sigismund. With the new High Elves, Slappy Dark elf Assasins and most importantly Greater Daemons (normally Slaneesh) making sure you strike first because you swap initiative and have the sword has become very important.
You then target him at the enemies biggest hero/unit and sit there for the game while something, like a steam tank, flanks them.
I also run 3 level 2 wizards in the army, so their spells + War altar bound + 2 spells from the AL does a lot of damage. Soul fire has been very nasty Vs Brets & the like.
Yeah, arch lector on the war altar makes alot more competitive sense than in a unit, being unbreakble and getting a free 4+ ward save, another bound, impact hits, units strength 6, etc. I will not argue that putting him in a unit is better. Many people find the war altar kind of ridiculous and hard to deal with, coupled with a steam tank, many will whine about it being cheesy (get it: wine n cheese...nevermind). If you put him in a unit, it is more friendly, and he is still very effective for his points.
I run my arch lector on a barded warhorse wih heavy armor, shield, Holy Relic, VHS, and Icon of Magnus to buff the unit against fear/terror causers. By putting him in a unit, I remove the 110 pt warrior priest from the unit and save points. Also, he is better in challenges, can cast 2 prayers, which actually makes a huge difference. I give him the Holy Relic to make up for the 4+ ward he lost by not being in the altar. This frees up some points to add a level 2 wizard to my list to crank up my magic phase. Makes the list more fun to play against and changes my playstyle a bit which is also fun and more of a challenge.
i run my arch lector the same as von smallhousan, when i am against daemons, dark elves, vampire counts and all those armies with nasty hero/lords. but otherwise i run him by swapping the sword of sigismond with sword of might/striking/gw. i think that the benefits you gain from the war altar are definately worth the points for them, though sometimes i put him in a unit of 5 inner circle knights w/ war banner and 2 lvl2 wizards and sometimes captain, pegasus, doomfire ring combo
I play a guy who uses the Gorgon shield on the altar's rider. It's really a pain sometimes. I was quite pleased to beat down his Altar and priest at the last tournament, though it took 2 treemen a couple of turns to do it.
