I tend to run 3 x 10 Unites of Gunners 2 Hellablasters and 3 Cannons... for my Shooters... But If I don't not have a hill I often have difficulty setting up my Gun Lines and my Battle Lines effectively... Any Advice?
I've been Playing Empire now for several months and have been testing several different themed armies, and I am very excited to put to test some of what I have read on this site... I am happy to be aboard these forums...
well my advice is to not take so much artillery. for the most part people hate playing against gunlines. while they may be effective, they are also very boring.
otherwise, place your hellblasters between and slighty forward of your infantry units and dont advance in order to maximise arcs of fire.
for the cannons, put them at the extreme ends of the board to maximise crossfire and to get flanks.
handgunners.....well you might have to put them 5 wide only to begin and redeploy them once other units leapfrog them. it might cost a turn of shooting but since they cant fire on the first turn if you win roll-off, its not much of a sacrifice.
Oi! Get off me beard!
why not ditch a couple cannons (personally 2) and get mortars they destroy infantry blocks and if you put an engineer in them they are horribly deadly.
With so many cannons after round 1 or 2 your going to have to be wasting shots on infantry and if the army has no big bads you just wasted 300 points and 3 special slots.
personally i think that handgunners are not too good unless against low toughness O.K. armor cavalry which is not too common, but i have never used them in such quantities so my opinion might be invalid.
I don't really run a whole lot of gun line myself, I prefer the thrill of CC but definately use them to back my units up. However, I was thinking of the other options you have for a gun line and I was wondering what you thought of this: Outriders. In a way, they are just armoured handgunners, just a lot more expensive. However, I was thinking about the problem of space and well, hey, they don't take up a whole lot, plus they can move really well. Not to mention they can box your opponent in so you got yourself a shooting gallery. But these are just all hypothetical thoughts...not sure if it would actually work.
I agree with the outriders. A unit of 5 outriders easily gives u more shots then a block of 10 handgunners plus they have better BS so you can hit more. 2 or 3 units of 5 outriders is easily worth as much as 30 handgunners.
What is the rule for handguns this edition? I don't have a full version of the army book...are they like last ed. with the D6 extra range on the first turn?
you have to have acces to the rules to play the game, plain and simple.
Helstrom Rocket battery is much better than a hellblaster. A unit of outriders will outperform your basic unit of handgunners because of the increased BS, # of shots and armor save. They will also condense the amount of room on the board and points allowing you to get some more troops.
I do have to admit that gunlines are usually the least fun to play and easiest armies to beat because once you get into combat, the whole army folds.
Plus, you're missing out on some of the funnest parts of the game, namely the movement phase and combat.
lets not forget hes missing the occasional funny magic phase to..... (funny to see a chaos guy get turned into a spawn
For the ultimate gunline at 2k list that comprises of:
Karl Franz on Dragon with Hitty Hammer (Ghal Maraz)
4x10 Handgunners - Each with marksman with Hochland
2x Steam Tanks
And possible 10 huntsmen.
Either way that list has now kept me winning for 20 games straight now, and is affectionately called "boring to play against" by the lowlife at my local GW. Is no one up for a challenge these days?! But yeah that is my filthy gunline of unneccesary death, which only ever changes to throw 4 wizards in, in the place of Karl Franz.
Hope that helps
If I were to beat that force by shooting, I'd just mass up on XBows or Glade Guard, then say "I win".
Gunlines will be hard pressed to work against ItP units (like Undead), where Panic will do diddly, or one of my fast armies (ie Ogres or WEs- combat Turn 2 anyone?).
At the original poster: My advice is to balance up your list. Take a look at the VW. Get me to link it for you if you can't find it. There, you will see a user called Arklite's list. That is most likely going to win the tournament, because it can take on all comers, and simply adapt strategy, because everything's there.
