After neglecting this item for a long long time I now have new found respect for the Crystal ball. For it's points costs it's an amazing item that can forewarn you enemy surprises, show dispell scrolls and reveal anything and everything else.
This is especially true with the two newest armies out, Daemons & Dark Elves, where the crystal ball will reveal the presence of, for example, Khorne movement banners & Siren Songs or in the case of Dark elves things like the ring of hotec and assassins. After an e-mail to the WHW events team a response from Andy Joyce also said that should Shadowblade be hiding in your army and he is revealed by a crystal ball he is counted as rolling a 1, so will be placed by you (the empire player) and does not get to attack that turn either, so will generally always loose combat.
In a game where movement & magic is just as, if not more important than, combat and shooting the crystal ball is fast becoming a must have in my empire army.

Interesting. I too often don't take it but I can see it's use. Problem is it's very situational. I can see it being a nice combo with the Law of Gold. You get an idea of a unit that may have 1 item in it and be able to take a shot at it.
BTW can you expound about shadowblade. I don't know much about the new DE.
Shadowblade can pretty much hide ANYWHERE in man-sized units, so can end up in your prized unit of Great Swords, and kill your general before you can blink an eyelid....
This Crystal ball - does it allow you to see Demonic gifts? As demonic gifts aren't strictly magic items....
Check the Daemonic FAQ. I believe Gifts are treated as magic items with the exception of that there can be more than one in an army.
ooo, really? Then the Null stone has a raison d'etre!! And Vauls Unmaking becomes a WHOLE lot more useful!
It doesn't just specify magic items, it says the player has to reveal any and all things he does not normally have to and who has them. So yes, you would have to show gifts.
