I now that this is kinda premature but since HE, VC and Daemons have come out, they have introduced some very interesting concepts and designs to the game and I was curious on what you guys thought our new book should do to continue to make us a unique and strong army to play.
Personally, I wanted to take a hint from the HE book since they only need to take one core at below 2000 and I thought that for Empire, we could have one more hero than normal, so at 2250, we could take 4 heros and 1 lord. I don't think that it would be terribly overpowered either, it would do well to represent the size of our forces and the diversity in it. But I do think that it is kinda a raw concept and could be refined a bit. What are your ideas?
Well for starters. the Empire book is still very new, and considered 7th edition. It does have those named characters after all, so I wouldn't be hoping for a new book anytime soon.
As for the ideas. HE's will be the only one able to choose 1 core. It's something unique to them, and would throw the game out of whack far too much to have more than one army doing it. I also don't see Empire with extra heros. DE's have the Assassins, Brets have the compulsory BSB, I just don't see a reason for Emprie to get it. They have some pretty good choices and magic items as it is I think.
I don't think I'd change anything in the book, really. It's got some solid choices, it's diverse with plenty of choice, a well rounded book.
Ok, and I admit that we are previlged in that, some armies got it alot rougher (scaven, lizardmen, bretonnia, etc). but still, it never hurts to have some intellectual discussion on some interesting things that could be applied to the army book. And frankly, I think that HE ability to take less core choices and more special and rare will still remain unique despite another army being able to take more heros. I mean, I find it frustrating that despite the fact that we obviously rely on our heavy numbers to take out an opponent that we are limited to the same number of characters as they are. Like why do they get to have a wizard that is obviously better quality but we get less than that and don't get more as compensation. It is like that for our basic troops, why not our heroes? Maybe limit the amount of magical items they can take or what level caster they can be or maybe just make a whole bunch of them unit upgrades but I think that we should have access to a large number of very cheap and only marginally better characters.
Leave characters as they are. They are supposed to be cheap and themed. Givng them an extra one is stepping on the Brets and reducing core is stepping on the HE.
Make the rocket battery and volleygun 2 for 1 slot choices.
Allow core knights to have medium cav men-at-arms for second ranks. These would have similar stats, but have no barding or shield and would be armed with great weapons. They could then be much cheaper (say 13pt or so?) and allow better CR for the knights.
Dunno what else. We should be a horde type army list tho, so anything that makes our troops cheaper and artillery more plentiful is good in my book.
What is best in life? Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.
there is nothing wrong with empire. They are competative as they are.
The empire doesn't need any other type of knight (knights are for brettonia)
They don't need more firepower (they can outshoot a dwarf in my opinion)
There is no reason to have anything more or like the high elves. They are two distinct armies and should be kept that way.
In fact, there really only a couple of things that are wrong with the book or could use some adjustment (probably won't happen for 7 years)
Change the chosen knights back to core and 0-1. Do something for the engineer so that he is a viable character or get rid of him. Raise the price of the War Alter slightly. I think it's slightly undercosted for what it does.
Fix the cav hammer or great weapon on cavalry rule. Fix halberds (no one in their right mind would take these in an aspiring-to-be-competative list)
Add Priests of Ulric. Not really needed, you can use the Sigmar rules and just change the name... but I like Ulric. Proper Gods ftw!!! None of your Sigmar man-god, demi-devine, reincarnating then getting conveniently snuffed by a Skaven assassin (I smell a rat) nonsense.
But I won't get into a fantasy theological argument in here
And I'd still like to see a way to get a properly Ulrican list, without resorting to the quasi-legal Cult of Ulric or Army of Middenland rules.
FABRICATI DIEM, PVNC
Despite Wolf Lord Herby's comments of heresy, I think that it would be a good idea. For example, if you wanted to take a Nuln army, that some choices would be limited but other new units could be available or be taken at a cheaper cost. Personally, I would like to see greatswords upgradable like they were with the Teutonic (did i spell that right?) Guard for Storm of Chaos. I also think it would pay respect to the various regions the regiments come from and what beliefs/traditions they carry with them. And I would like haliberds to be a viable option again, however that would mean not modifying the weapon since that implies redoing the rule book. Maybe they could have a special rule that they since they are trained heavily with the use of this weapon, they can use it for some defensive advantage and thus get a +1 armour save in combat. They still wouldn't be able to use a shield with it though.
realistically speaking though a halberdier is still bulky thus the +1 save would only make sense when charged since the charger would meet the pointy end of the halberd and would most likely hesitate for a moment. However since the halberdier is more lengthy then a sword they would be fresh meat in close quarters when the enemy would breach the wall. Thats realistically speaking though.
i like the idea though
halberds with heavy armor and WS4 for 6 points. That way people would take them and use them.
But at this point, basically all the empire troops are going to be WS4 which removes the supposed fluffy advantage that elves and other mystical beings had over supposedly average humans. Eveyone take swordsmen anyway so I'm not sure if it would make that much of a difference.
Empire is fine as is, although i do admit the engineer is borderline useless.
I just want to see the war wagon come back, it was so much fun to use in previous editions.
Also, the detachment rules already give empire a ridiculous advantage if used right.
Oi! Get off me beard!
