Hey all, I got a chance to grab the anniversary Empire box couple weeks ago, I decided to go with Empire because of the recent Warhammer Online addiction. Anyways, I skimmed through the army book and found that Greatsword.. for all their intent and purposes, I dont see how they are good. I've played alot of games against Empire before, I dont see them being field alot. Their absurd low leadership isnt helping their Stubborn tests.. the only way around it that I see is to put a character in and give the unit a Stubborn banner, but that would be too much point and waste of a character slot.
How do you guys use your Greatswords? Are they worth putting into a tournament-style game?
Absurd low LD? They got 8, that's rather high for humans (you'd need lord level characters to surpass this)
-stubborn at ld8
-plate armor gives a moderate save even against shooting (too bad they're too proud to use shields )
-and of course the detachment rule (although that goes for all state troops)
-ws4 again, outside characters the best ws empire will get
Of course, all in all they're not too tough (still humans after all) but if hth goes awry they at least got decent chances to hold the field.
Basically, they're comparable with Swordmen (more expensive but better staying power due to stubborn and at least a bit potential to deal damage to the enemy with st5)
Admittedly, they take up a special choice which is their greatest downside
My uses: If i can expect fear-causers among my opponent, they're likely to get a warrior priest or a captain with the Icon of Magnus to prevent losing due to fear.
in other cases, when I field Greatswords I always bring a BSB into the battle (might or might not join them)
Re-rolling an unmodified 8 is the best bet empire can get
It ain't easy bein' green... :-)
I'll always remember the first time I used them (it was a proxy game quite a while back). The entire unit got decimated by some Fanatics except for the unit champion, who managed to hold off a fully ranked unit of night gobbos single-handedly for a mighty long time (given the size of the match, that was no mean feat).
Otherwise, all I have to say was just covered nicely by Orkbert. They can hold the line, and do a decent amount of killing as well, and they're comparatively cheap.
Remember, they are competing for space with our pistoliers, outriders, inner circle knights, cannons, and mortars. If you want any of our famed artillery, you're losing special choices. Our only fast cavalry choice (and quite a good one at that) is special. Of course, fast cavalry does best when fielded in pairs, so there goes another choice. Inner Circle and Outriders are good at different things, but just about as effective as the GreatSwordsmen when it comes to army composition. Not to mention the fact that they can redeploy to ensure that they don't spend all game tied up against some gobbos (looks disapprovingly at AFG )
When it comes to competition, Flaggies do a better job holding the line as they are 'unbreakable' and can be taken as core if you nab a priest. Of course, powergamers often have a waraltar, so why not grab 2 units of flaggies? They also compete for less space- Helblaster, Helstorm, and STank. Those other options all have special choice equivalents.
Really, your rare choices define your specials, who define your use of GreatSwords. If you take a Helstorm instead of a Mortar, and a STank instead of Inner Circle Knights, you're more likely to field a unit of GSs. Otherwise, you'll probably be grabbing cannons and fast cavalry, with a unit of Flaggies and a specialist artillery piece to boot.
I don't like Flaggies, it doesn't fit my Marienburger fluff and i find it hard to believe they don't get mown down in the first 5 minutes of any battle.
So to me it's a mortar or cannon, hellblasster volleygun, great swords to stick my captain in and some free roaming pistoliers!
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.
