ive been wracking my brain about this for some time, a hero slot used (precious) a stat line that is the same as a marksman except given a extra wound.
for a shooty hero i think bs 5 minimum. 50 points captian bs 5, 65 point engineer bs 4.
The Engineer has access to some cool equipment (like the Pigeon bomb), and can help out with other machines (like giving the Helblaster BS4), but otherwise, he is pretty useless, and I'd rather take other hero-level choices.
so hes a cannon unit champion?
He's a hero-level character who takes up a hero choice. However, he can choose to join artillery crew, like all other characters. Unlike other characters though, he can actually do something with them.
An engineer can perhaps help out if you really want your cannon to wrk, but yeah, seeing as though you can give every handgunner marksman the very potent HLR, the engineer isn't all that usefull on his own.
Indeed - Engineers are good for the occasional laugh, but the only one you're ever likely to see it the engineer sat in the hatch of a steam tank.

personally, in smaller games i find him amazing.
When everything choice counts and screw ups need to be few, whats scarier than an engineer making that cannon even more deadly, or better yet, giving your helblaster those vital extra hits to destroy a unit. How about when that fast cav or those scouts get near your warmachines! An engineer can (and i take it lightly) give you that vital grapeshot str roll.
Pigeon Bombs, if lucky, can piss anyone off. so thats an upside if your cannon/warmachine doesnt misfire.
The mechanical steed (although i havent taken it) seems like it could be a good alternative to a captain. Granted a captain barded with a lance, fpa, and shield will be more destructive than d3 impact hits and cheaper.
besides that, hes useless and shouldnt be considered unless your playing a nuln fluff army, or playing a high points game (3k up).
