I have recently decided that I am going to start an Empire army. I have the rulebook and the army book, but I do not have any models, yet. I am going to go out and pick up the battalion box and maybe a general and BSB box.
Is there anything else I will need to start my army, and could I get some advice on doing it?
It depends what style you want to play? Do you want to go detatchment heavy, knight heavy, gunline, etc.? The batallion is pretty balanced, so is a good start, but it depends on how you want to play as to whether you want to get the general/BSB, wizards or warrior priests. Have a play with what you get in the batallion, and maybe proxy a bit til you find out what characters you want. This will also hlp you discover your playstyle.
Yeah, definately read through the book and see what you like as far as special, rares, heros go. Then work from there. The only consistent units I see when I play against empire is the Pope-mobile, Knights, and of course state troops. The rest is up to you.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

The Dutch Legion
Mine has no knights either! Lots of troops, many small units, flagellants, priests, great(hammers)swords. And as much of an immunity topschology as possible.
Yet you could have gunlines, all cavalry armies, magic heavy armies, almost anything you want!

my son, daughter, and future son-in-law play
i got a $900 army, most still in shrink wrap, for $290 on ebay
some of the halberg points got broke and the units had odd combinations
my son likes the assembly and painting, he fell buying used pieces is cheating
be careful of out of print units and poor assebly and painting
I have seen great deals if you are patient
thanks for thequality of the forums
Hi thunderbeast, welcome to the librarium! I have a similar tendency to your son, I love the modelling aspect of the hobby. OOP minis can be good though, in giving a unique look to your army.
The battalion is a pretty good deal. In addition to it I would defiantly pick up another box or two of regular State troops so you can field a 20-25 Swordsman unit (first unit of State troops should always be swordsmen), along with the character box you mentioned.
With that you could make a nice 500pts list.
- Amour of Meteoric Iron
- great weapon
- Full command
Helstrom Rocket Battery is the best weapon against massed units. I've destroyed and have had 3/4 of fully ranked units(10-15guys at a time) destroyed by that thing. Because of that, it is better in larger point games. Great cannons have limited use as well at small point games.
Camel has a good idea for a small point army. You want a little bit of shooting and enough guys to put up a fight in a small army. The real question is, what point level are you planning on playing at?
Hi there all! Not trying to hijack the thread but I to just recently got into empire although I got a great deal on the army box, battalion, a bunch of characters and a steam tank. I'm looking to do a nuln themed army which I am thinking is a gun lineish army. But one question I have is that I've been seeing big units of swordsmen supported by a detachment of halberds and then some hand gunners and I was wondering do most people have the swordsmen moving forward or standing still? I know 5 hand gunners isnt much but I didnt know if they were there to just give the stand and shoot bonus or what.
