Okay, got in another game against Skaven ... First and foremost, I hate those damn rats. Not that is out of the way, on to questions:
1. With regard to empire archers, it is my understanding that they are skirmishers but can also be taken as a detachment. If I take archers as a detachment, do they lose the skirmish ability and are deployed ranked up? Or are they still skirmishers and can be deployed as a skirmish screen? It seems that the skirmish requirement that they be deployed near some terrain that hides them conflicts with detachments having to be deployed withing 3" of a parent unit.
2. Does the Hochland rifle that an engineer gets allow you to target a character/specific model that is engaged in melee? My understanding is that you can't normally do that for fear of hitting your own troops, but does the gun's precision rule allow you to do so?
1. Skirmishers don't have to be deployed in terrain, scouts do. Your archers will still be skirmished.
2. You can't shoot at models in hand to hand combat. The hochland rifle lets you pick out characters in units that you normally can't shoot at directly.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
I don't think you can shoot into combat, even assuming you can see the character in the melee, unless it specifically rules in the Army Book that you can.2. Does the Hochland rifle that an engineer gets allow you to target a character/specific model that is engaged in melee? EDs: Dammit! Beaten to it! Serves me right for getting distracted while posting.

Thanks for the quick responses. You are right, Archon, I was confusing Huntsmen with Archers. Sometimes you just need someone to slap you upside the head with what's in front of you to actually see it.
