In the past few weeks, I thought I'd try out a new cast of characters at 2250 points. This is what I used:
Lvl 4 Wizard Lord, Pegasus, Grey Wand, varying other items, including scrolls, power stones, the Armour von Tarnus, etc
Lvl 2 Wizard, Rod of Power, Ring of Volans or Power Stone
Warrior Priest, hvy armour, GW, VHS, occasionally the Sigil of Sigmar - my General.
A cc-geared Captain.
This was a case of a converted model being given a run, and me liking the build. It has potential to reach 11PD (too many to be granted admission to some tournies around here) and 9DD, plus a decent number of bound spells. With this, I've shut down a HE magic phase in the past, and achieved a few cool things with my own magic.
So anyways, I was just wondering what you guys thought of this. I'm looking at about 700 points of characters to weaken the enemy's magic phase, and have a decent one of my own. I have a couple of questions: 1) Do you think this is too much magic offence or defence? Like I say, there are a lot of points that have gone into this, but would there be a particularly large excess of PD/DD if you were to run these guys? 2) I'm thinking of dropping the Captain for something else. Is another Lvl2 Wizard overkill here? Or would you go for another WP, or something else entirely?
I've decided to retire these guys for a while, but given how they've performed for me, I wouldn't mind coming back to it in the future, so I wouldn't mind hearing from a few other members here.
Personally, i say too much magic... experienced players should be able to counter this reasonably easy. 700pts in characters is not good for empire, for chaos, no problemo, but empire'll suffer.
Still nice to see what i've always said: don't underestimate Imperial magic!
One thing that annoyed me though: "It has potential to reach 11PD (too many to be granted admission to some tournies around here)" Why are you banned for having that many pd?! Unless there is a rule in the fantasy rule book against this the tournament can just [George W Bush] off, as far as i care.
While I'm new to Empire, I feel that I can speak on the subject of points in characters.
I've found myself spending about a third of my points in any given battle (at most point levels) on characters. Archon is right to say that they enhance the rest of the army.
Sure you can field another unit if you drop a character, but units can't always replace characters. They provide Ld, magic defense, offensive magic, combat damage potential, and bestow abilities on units they join (hatred, MR, psychology immunities,...). It is also important not to overlook the fact that characters wrap all the above perks into a single model. This has its obvious weaknesses, but the boon of more and better quality attacks can turn a combat and a single spell can break a unit.
Occasionally, I ask myself the same question ('are they worth it?'), but my in game experiences have proven the value of characters.
I think that 700 points in 2250 is very reasonable.
