I'm playing a very cheesy player sometime soon with my Empire. My list is in the army list section. From what I know his list contains:
2 Masters one w/ Unbreakable BSB
~15 shades in one unit with the Ring of Hotek
~3 assassins (who like joining the shade unit)
3 units of 5 Dark Riders
Yeah. It's a Deathstar. Now what the hell can I do to beat it? My list is:
Lector on Altar w/SoS/Dawn Armour/Volans Ring
2 WPs on Horses w/Speculum+doomfire ring+stuff
Captain on Horse w/Casket+Lance etc
5 Knights w/Musician
5 Inner Circle Knights w/Musician
My current thoughts are: Sniping out the characters with the Hochland. Specifically the assassins. Abusing Soulfire seems fun. His magic defense does sod all against Prayers. Reducing the unit to WS1 and charging it with knights should have some effect (that requires the Altar to cast it though). There's also the Steam Tank, with it's steam gun.
But the big problem is that everything that gets near that unit is going to end up dead. And there's not very much I can do about it.
Hi archnomad! i read your previous posts.... about the shaved heads i have no
idea!! your army is themed about warrior priests! so we cant have an argumenent here ...
Now about vs DE army you said above... he is melee.... You have shooting! jusT wipe
HIM OUT THAT shade unit!
also to be honest i never leave my "castle" without 2 cannons ..... if i were you i would
drop the IC form knights and you should a cannon in....Thats for me....if you dont want shooting is up to you then
If only that were true. His unit puts out 36 BS5/6/7 S3 Armour Piercing shots a turn. That'll do major damage to most everything. And realistically, my crossbows and Repeater Handguns/Pistols probably wont be able to hit it. If I were playing that army, I'd hug cover, and they're skirmishers. Meaning -2 to shoot off the bat.
I'm really at a loss for how to deal with it!
Hm.... have you ever charge it with stank? add a Helstorm maybe? or mortar? no -2 for
shooting just good guesses... Hm?
You should deploy a few inches back, so he can't get a shot off first turn. That will get you an extra turn of shooting. Try using some more Crossbowmen for extra range. Put the Knights and the Tank into the unit together, and target the BSB with as many attacks as you can. When he falls, they aren't Unbreakable any more!
On a side note - does any one know of hand if Unbreakable units can stand and shoot as a charge reaction?
The careful application of terror is a form of communication in itself - Zutta Law #4.
Well, IMO the whole shooting them, really wont work. Maybe bring a nasty cheese muffin yourself? That being none other than Valkmar the Grim, you already have the priest on the alter.
Another thing, the unit is 15 models? With a few characters? Seeing as that is his army, that is only a little above 20ish wounds, With the Steam Tank, the alter (possibly mister Grim), and knights you can win easily by killing them all. The steam tank & alter together have HUGE potential.
You have flagellants you said? Well run them in a unit of 30 and rush the unit, its a little costly but fight fire with fire (or unbreakable with unbreakable to be technical). Then hit the flanks with Steam Tank an alter.
Sorry for post length but, one last thing, a Tooled up Dreadlord usually entitles the Pendant, Crimson death (or whip) and the Regen armor. to dead with that hit him with low strength attacks, like a wizard perhaps? Something so his ward save is not ridiculous, or go for volume of attacks all he needs is three 6's and hes gone.
Anyway hope that helps a bit, and again sorry for post length.

answer... MORTARS!!!! it would require you changing up your list a bit, but they are still T3 elves with little armor... just buy 2 mortars and maybe a hellstorm and blast away. a few good hits and suddenly hes not much of a match, espeically for a charging steam-gunning steamtank.
1) wizard with BEAST lore, to get that one spell that can paralyze cavalry units/monsters.
2) Great Cannon to kill the Hydra
3) Flaggellants, something that won't break.
