I am still trying to understand the and employ the various state troops in battle. I am speaking in terms of big block of parent units more than detachmanets.
For example if I had 2 main blocks of 25 to 30 swordsmen, and another of spearmen, and both had the same detachment setup (1 CC, one ranged), how would I use them differently in a battle to use them both to maximum effectivemess.
In other words why take a block of spearmen over a second block of swordsmen?
I am coming from playing VC and I quickly realized how to use skeletons and ghouls differently, but don't see it as easily between the state troops when used as parent units.
Well, look at what bonuses they receive from there weapons, and when they get those bonuses.
Spear men, are good for a defensive block against poorly armed/armored opponents.
Swordsmen, are a good allround unit. They have the best WS for a core troop, and the best save in CC (4+parry).
Halberds are the best "Armour" buster unit, because they have S4.
But in all reality, Halberds are taken most often as detachments (Counter charging) as they cant take the charge overly well. Spear men, shouldn't be detachments, as they don't want to be moving, and Swordsmen, are the best we have
If you are going up against WS 4 enemies, there is a case to be made for Swordsmen. They have a 16% better chance at scoring a hit then at WS 3 they would have.
So it comes down to what you are going up against and how willing you are to tweak your list.
You always want to tweak your list ,the last thing you want is to rely on the same list when your opponent can do a list to counter it.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.
