not an empire player (yet... have to finishing painting my ogres first)
I was wondering if anyone out there ever takes an Empire Dragon? I don't own the army book but believe that it is an option. Is it worth the cost, the character choice(s)?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
Only Karl Franz gets it, but when he is on the thing, I hear it has the power of 10 lightning bolts.
in 5th edition you had the option of mounting any character on a dragon.
I know they have sought to seek out a balance of sorts in 7th edition and while a Dragon could be used, it probably should not. And even karl Franz, he should be on a griffin, not a dragon.
I have played it once against a Chaos Dragon. It is trult an amazing battle. Gharal Maraz (his fancy Hammer) is the only choice when he mounts a dragon. Don't let that guy try to tell you its overpowered. Chaos has dragons. High elves has a dragon. Wood elves have a dragon. Orcs have a dragon. So have at it. Great times
as an empire player I once used a dragon in a battle.
The scenario was I was playing with the ONE PERSON that I have ever known that used Chaos Dwarfs, and we were essentially doing that one battle between CD vs HE that is in the CD sourcebook. 3000 points, no restrictions on weapons, armor, magic items, etc, etc.
So I used a Grand Master of the White Wolves Knight's on a dragon, to essentialy the get the effect I wanted. I think I used the Armor of Protection, Spell Shield, and the Hammer of Sigmar as my equipment.
From what I recall it was a damn good battle.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone

The whole fact that I'm looking into an empire army, is the fact that I can build almost any kind of army: cavalry, shooty, close combat... and that I have access to monsters, war machines, fast cav, all the magic lores, etc, etc. I never thought that a dragon was also in the army book until I was browsing through it for a second....this makes me even more interested (even though I would probably never field the thing).
Having a ton of options with empire will feel like christmas morning compared to the narrow selection ogres offer me.
As to the actual model, if i where ever to field 1, i'd get the HE dragon, that model is 7 shades of nice.

Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

I'd say the HE Dragon is the superior one - the Star Dragon eats all the other variants alive and then asks for seconds (but I would say that!) A HE Dragon Prince with Star Dragon is a tough prospect due to the ferocity of the attacks from the Dragon, and the potential to be equipped woth Star lance.
I would sya that Karl Franz on Drago is a immensely powerful unit, more than capable of taking down even greater demons using the Ghal Maraz, and hence is a reasonable prospect if you are facing down opponents with uber units like Dragons, GDs, Treemen etc. Apart from cannonry, an Empire army isn't going to be able to deal with a dragon otherwise...
