New Empire player today, must say this place helped me enormously Went up against the dreaded Bretonnia in my first battle ever (1200 pts) and only lost by about 400 (which I guess -is- a lot) in the very last round when the other player got stupidly lucky to run down 3 of my units including knights with a war priest who not only failed their leadership by 1 but were caught by him getting the exact same distance as I did -.- Made a lot of mistakes that time tho and wasn't all that familiar with artillery and magic rules so I was pretty confident about my next battle.
In THAT battle, I absolutely DESTROYED a chaos force (which actually nearly massacred the breton player earlier, hah.. those bastard frenchies ALWAYS pull out the best in round 6) with a (for me, anyway) staggering 1049 to 89, him being left with one marauder (which he excellently hid for points) and his munchin chaos wizard, me only losing a 9 handgunner detachment (I -love- celestial wizards and that ward save). I have to say in both battles the hellblaster absolutely DOMINATED proceedings as I managed to force some of their best troops onto its line of sight.(somewhat I guess due to the fact the other players aren't really pros either, but definitely had played a lot of games and knew the game a lot better than me). This was especially painful to the fairly small chaos army whose two units of knights were turned to paste in two rounds worth of shooting.
Anyways, long intro rant and boasting aside, my question is this: which spells, abilities etc excatly give the Empire artillery re-rolls? Because, my chaos friend (the trounced one) claimed I cannot use hammer of sigmar for that purpose as "to hit" isn't the same as artillery dice?! If that's the case wouldn't The Portent of Far and Second Portent of Amul ALSO fail to give artillery re-rolls? Is he just wrong or is the only spell out of the three to actually GIVE re-rolls the Second Portent? (being it actually says unit re-rolls pretty much anything).
The only other way I can see getting a second chance with hellblaster is the engie, but I just cannot justify a hero slot and all those points even considering that beautiful hochland rifle (which he I suppose doesn't use even if I don't use re-rolls, it's enough that I use his BS instead of the artillery's right?)
Thanks in advance
You may not reroll the ARTILLERY DICE with any of the spells you mentioned. You may however use them for rerolls to hit or wound with the Hellblaster. The prayer (Hammer of Sigmar) is a warrior priest prayer. They can only be cast on characters or unit champions. Your hellblaster is neither.
Right, and to make things worse I just re-read the engie description, you CANNOT infact get ANY benefit on fancy artillery such as hellstorm and hellblaster, he just works with cannons and mortar. No wonder everyone hates this guy! Well, I guess that kinda helps put things into perspective, I was wondering why people seem to dislike the hellblaster, but seeing as the empire basically has no way -whatsoever- to make even one re-roll with it I guess it makes the whole thing a whole lot more unpredictable. Shame :/
well, you can use his ballistic skill...

Okay, here's another one for you guys. When you put your arch lector on the war altar does that automatically make him a large target as well? (merged with the altar) OR can he still be considered a separate model that can be targeted? From what I understand (and hope) the altar itself is separate but still gives the lector the +4 ward save.
The reason I ask is simple - those bloody bretonnians have that annoying vow of insta-murder on large targets (well, still have to hit and there's the 4 ward save but come on..chances are he has 10 ws and all those attacks?) and I was wondering if say challenging the guy who rushes your waltar saves you from his potential insta-kill or not? If so, adding a speculum just makes it way too easy, if not I guess adding it evens up the odds a little but even so (with his ws now stinking) the looming danger of killing blow is scary for such an expensive hero.
Hold on, even more noob questions from me
1) Does the war altar count as a normal spellcaster regarding RiP (remain in play) spells? Eg. if I choose to one round cast guardian light does it fade from existence if I choose to cast cleansing flare next?
2) As I understand it the Arch Lector can cast 2 prayers per turn but cannot maintain 2 RiP prayers. However, can he maintain ONE RiP prayer and still cast another one as normal (provided he isn't dispelled of course) or is the only way to get around this by casting your non-RiP prayer (say heal) first and then RiP-(p)ing it up again?
To be honest im new to empire too(yay me) But in my opinion 3 warriors priests is less points and can cast more spells and 3 remains(which i might add is painfull to people) they can also hide in squads and benefit from look out sir. Also if the alter is a large target , only it is it and the lecter is still a single model. It just like people riding dragons, only the creature large not the rider. In combat you have to target either the alter or the lecter when you attack. Hoped i helped you out in some way
Yeah, thanks.. that's kinda the way I figured it too. And yeah, warpriests are nice with that hatred and dispel dice but bound 4 is laughable for most good magic phase armies.. still, it does make the player consider using two dice, and if you had an arch-lector + 3 priests that's a potential 8 dispel dice needed.. more than most people have anyway so chances are unless the other guy is lucky with his single dice rolls at least one nice prayer will go through. Alternatively just pimp up a wizard and make them spend them all before you cast the prayers.
On the other hand, despite the hatred flagellants and prayers they do have poor poor combat stats and aren't nearly as good with magic as most wizards. Nevertheless, aside from a mage/artillery killer captain on a pegasus (just cause they're cool) wp's are my favorite empire heroes hands down.
I'm a big fan of WPs too, it's amazing just how many spells you can get off with just a few in your ranks. I take a WP, arch lector on WA, lv1 wizard (with van Horstmann's speculum and bear's anger for challenge hunting!) and a BSB with another bound spell. I normally try to give another bound item to one of the priests too, giving me 6 of 7 bound spells/turn. It can be VERY nasty!
