Hey guys, just reviewing army lists, having boosted my spearmen numbers so a large Parent unit can be formed. I was looking at how to field them (command, heroes etc).
This brought me onto topic of shields. Spearmen and halberdiers must purchase them. I can't really think of an occasion where paying 20% more to increase save from basically just magic/shooting would be useful for Halberdiers, they cannot use shields whilst wielding halberds.
Spearmen however may benefit more. Their strength lies in defence, but if the situation arises where it is better to charge, then the front rank can switch to shield and hand weapon for bonus save. I may be wrong, rulebook not in front of me, but I think they can wield spear and shield, at same time, but without the bonus that hand weapon brings.
So, do you guys use Halberdiers or Spearmen with shields or leave them as they are?
Cheese… milk's leap toward immortality
To be honest, I've had successes with my spearmen with and without shields, to the point of wondering if it really is anything particularly game-breaking. Ultimately, I'd say it comes down to the points. Do you have any spare? Are there better alternatives for the 30ish points to go? How many points are you playing? If you're playing a small game, you tend to want to keep your units fairly cheap, so whether you take them is a little more important.Spearmen however may benefit more. While the flexibility of defensive spearmen is undeniably nice, bear in mind that you're paying the same cost for a weaker swordsman if you use shields, so there is a bit of a drawback to it all. Anyhow, hope this helps .
you can use both a spear and shield at the same time, yes. So vs S3 enemies, yes a Shield is a great investment in order to double your chances at making the armor save.
As always it depends on whom you are up against.
I would NOT take Halberders with Shields if I knew I was going up against strong CC enemies (Green Skins, for example) on the grounds that any army that is not strong in shooting you need the free hand to use your halberd anyway.
i'd say never bother with buying a shield for any "spearmen" of any kind, EVER. just not worth the points. same goes with halberdiers, but thats just my opinion
if you know you are going against gunpowder armies then I would not take shields, as the enemy is going to shoot thru them and thus are wastes of points. If you are going against heavily armored or T opponents, then you don't want shields with halberds as you are going to need both hands to attack. Against S4 enemies you don't want them unless you already have light armor to begin with in order to have anything against them.
