I might be going against an Empire player soon, so I need to prepare myself for the worst thing possible......
Is there a powerful tournament army/combo for the Empire at 2000 points?
Well the good thing about the empire is that there are many great armybuilds, and many great ways to deal with an opponent. He can field a total gunline, an all cavalry army OR the good old blockhammer army (and anything in between). So its really not easy to tell what he might do.
The only advice i can give you so far is bring something with S 6+. If you're gonna prepare for the worst, then prepare for a SteamTank - which need a couple of highstrenghted hits to deal with.
If you told us what you are playing yourself i might be able to give abit more guidance?
Arch lector on war alter, (unbreakable, 4+ ward, free bound spell from lore of light)
Gorgan shield, (- 1 attack from an attacker to a minimum of of 1)
Sword of Sigismund, (strike first and +1 Strength)
Van Horstman Speculum, (option to swap stats with model in base contact of WS, S, T, A, and I)
Basically this guy is nuts and the bane of both dameons, characters on dragons (as he ca swap stats with the dragon) and any hard character. He charges in, either forces a challenge if he he has to or just picks a guy, then says, right, you now have my basic stats and i have yours, so WS5 S4 T4 A2 I4-5 for the opponent, in which case the gorgan shield drops those 2 attacks down to 1! not only that, but now he has the striking first rule at + 1 Stregnth and at you Int. say he was taking on a blood thirster this guy has just become WS10, S7, T6, A7(i think thats rite) at Int high, ...striking first...monsterous.
Oftern accompanied by
Hero on pegasus (flys about taking out lone characters and war machines)
with casket of sorcery ( to steal one spell a turn form enemy wizards in range, making them forget it, with the option of then releasing the spell during the game as a bound spell at casting value. and he can capture more than one and release them all at the same time).
then one or two scroll caddies.
Seen with it also 2 units of pistoliers
3 units of 10 state troops (just to make up core)
1-2 Steam tanks
This a a very destructive list and has its downfall in being able to capture objectives in senarios, concentrating instead on blitzing the enemy and winning by default.
Any list with a block of 20 Handgunners supported by two detachments of 10 Handgunners usually sets off the 'beardy' alarm in my head.
I used to field an artillery train/siege force; 3 Mortars and basic large blocks of Infantry with detachments. Although I never thought of it as "beardy" but it sure as hell was devastating in the shooting phase. Beware the War Alter, it will kick your ass if you are undead/deamonic.
What army are you fielding?
Warrior Prriests in a unit of Knights can be a nasty suprise, as they can in Pistolers too.
Arch Lector on War Altar with either:
- AoMI, VanHorstromm's Speculum, Sword of Sigismund
- AoMI, Mace of Helstrum
3 Wizards (one of them has Rod of Power)
Max Handgunners w/ Hochland Longrifles
3 Units of Flagellants
2 Steam Tanks
Easy as that. Sit back, shoot, kill characters. When get close, slam in with Altar and stanks/flaggies. Tried and true.
