I have finally got a reasonable understanding with the new fantasy rules and so i decided it was time to pick an army. Obviously it was Empire. So i went on to write a 750p list. Now i thought this would be easy and simple like it is in 40k, BUT i had the slight problem of not knowing how each unit is going preform on the table. So i have some questions:
1. i decided that the battle wizard would be the best heroe to take in a small game as he is more likely to earn his points back. I decided to go with the Lore of fire since it seems that the spells are very simple to cast and it would be easier to get to grips with using magic. But the problem for this was that i dont know what magic items to give him. Most of the items which help magic leave no space to get a armour or ward save. So what equipment will be most useful to give him???
2. I thought it would be wise to take advantage of the attachments special rule. So i assumed that the swordsmen would be the best parant unit and maybe halberdiers as one detachment and then a range based unit for the other detachment. So can someone tell how a detachment should be made to be most effective???
3. Which is the best ranged weapon to use: Handgun, crossbow or bow. They all cost the same points but which does the best???
4. Greatswords or knights. Both would be good against heavy infantry. Greatswords has numbers and knights have speed so which is better.
Those are the only problems i have had so far but any other tips which be appreciated.
Wellcome at Empire!
At small points the wizzard should be cheap. I give him Doomfire ring in most cases. It helps you to spend your power dice if you would have too much for a single wiz. I prefer spearman over swordsman because of the amount of attacks they can make but swordsman will do in most cases as well. For detach i like the freecompany and halberdiers. I've never used ranged detach so i can't help in that one
Generally when choosing ranged unit you have to check your enemies average arm save. Against WoC, Breton and other well armoured armies take handgunners otherwise x-bows.
I like knights much more. They have the mobility that other Empire units does not have. Give them great weapons and a Warrior Priest to lead 'em. That will be a really hard hitting unit. (In 8th edition lance become useless)
I hope i could help!
Personally, I would go Warrior Priest for small games. With a battle wizard, you probably wont be getting many, if any spells off, whereas WP has more use with hatred, prayers, DD, etc. Each to their own, but you'd probably have to spend a lot of points on the wizard to make him worth while.
A big block of halberdiers with swords detach are good as you can get more halbs per point and over time, do more damage, but being only small 750 point army, best go for swords parent and halb detach for the extra saves and higher WS. Halbs really pull ahead when you have 30+ troops in a unit. Only use 1 detachment per parent as you will be using up all your points on detachments and will have trouble filling your core requirements if you want to take something else cool.
Best ranged is a toss up between xbows and guns. Xbows have a longer range, but guns have an extra -1 AS, both are armor piercing, but you will get to shoot with xbows a turn earlier.
Personally, Greatswords. For knights, you are going to want big blocks of maybe 10, which is already pushing 270 points with full command, so you wont have much left for everything else. Greatswords are good, cheap, and stubborn and with a 4+ AS, they will last you a long time. Throw your WP in here if you take one and they become godly.
Also, unless your opponent has big creatures or mounts, use mortars over cannons they blow infantry blocks to bits.
I, too, would take a WP as my only character in smaller games. He's less fighty than a captain, but a lot more survivable than a wizard, and he's going to do good things to a unit that he joins with hatred and his S4 attacks. Plus, he adds a free dispel die, so you're going to be messing up the enemy magic phase more than with a wizard.
Empire spears are horrible, I'd go with either halberds or swordsmen. In a larger game, I'd definitely go with the swordsmen, but at such a low points level...halberds are probably the way to go. When you get into larger games, the halberds that you build now can serve as detachments! Conversely, at such a low points level, you're going to want swordsmen for your detachments. The reason is that you want them to stay above the 9-model level as long as possible to make their supporting flank charges worthwhile...so their survival is more important than their offense. I'd go with a block (or two) of 30 halberds with a detachment of 15 swordsmen.
I'd generally take crossbows over handguns. The extra range is far more valuable than the extra armor penetration. In larger games, take a mix, but when you can only have one or the other, take crossbows (I take 20 of each in 3000 points).
At 750 points, I wouldn't take knights or greatswords...they cost too much! You'd have to spend about a third of your points to make them even moderately useful. I would, however, take some pistoliers (97 points for 5 with a musician) and maybe some artillery (definitely a mortar or two at this level).
Try something like this:
30 halberdiers with two detachments of 15 swordsmen each
5 pistoliers with musician
That leaves a few points to spend on wargear for the priest...I'd recommend the armor of meteoric iron and a mundane great weapon. Obviously, put the priest in charge of the halberdiers.
