Well, I've won my last 3 games pretty easily.... and I'm looking for more of a challenge. Right now my army includes all the usual "Empire cheese" (I hate that word). A War Alter, a Steam Tank, and a Lv4 Life Wizard. I've thought about my army's storyline (Tileans following the goddess of strategy and war, Myrmidia) and have decided that the War Alter is probably unnecessary, and that I can switch my lore up. Do you think I can be sucessful with an Arch Lector on foot and using Heavens or Light or am I handicapping myself too much? (I've been playing Warhammer for about 3 months now and the people at my store can be pretty competitive).
Or do I even need an Arch Lector at all? I might try out a Templar Grand Master and a Lv 4 with a BSB, a Captain on Pegasus, a Warrior Priest, and an Engineer.
Please just tell me if I'm being stupid...... I like to have fun but I like to win a few games too.....
I don't understand the necessity of the war altar. It is a ridiculously expensive tarpit with no offensive output. If your opponent has half a brain he will attack the altar itself and bypass unbreakable once the altar falls. You have to stay close to the altar to heal it with lore of life, so that wizard has to be vulnerable at some point.
You must be playing high points level to include a Lv 4 wizard and a War altar. At those levels your opponent is able to bring equally cheese lords. Wait till teclis hits the table, or chaos lords on dragons.
Walter isn't at all necessary. I have an AL, but I treat him just like a regular WP, except that he had a larger budget for toys and he adds two DD to the pool instead of one. The main thing is, I have more use for heroes than lords, so I'm happy to take a priest out of the lord budget instead.
I had no idea that a L4 life wizard was considered mandatory cheese. I take one...but I had a really hard time deciding which lore to take. It's certainly not a no-brainer. Although taking a L4 mage might be, what lore you choose for him isn't.
Stank might be cheese, I don't know. But it's certainly not anywhere near a mandatory choice.
I probably wouldn't take a templar, or a general...but in a large enough game, I'd have a hard time not taking KF with hammer on dragonback, just to say "see, puny humans have 700+ point models, too!"

I thought up a list without the Alter last night and was thinking of running my Arch Lector like this:
Arch Lector - Great Weapon, Armour of Meteoric Iron, Holy Relic, Speculum 231 points
Or I could drop the Speculum for a Magic Weapon, maybe Sword of Anti-Heroes, and upgrade my Pegasus Wizard to Gelt (at 2500 points, that would bring my Lords to 625 exactly ha...)
With the points saved I can put 3 units of State Troops, detachments, and a unit of Knights on the table. (Otherwise I'd have to cut one of the units as I just wouldn't have the points to fill it out) I can back them up with 2 Cannons, 2 Rockets, and then either a big unit of Outriders or the Steam Tank. As my next game is against Dwarves, I'll probably let the Steam Tank at home haha.....
