Struggling to find out exactly how this works in regards to shooting and picking the character out.
I understand the placement of the mounted character with a unit but;
because he is not the same unit type (cavalry-infantry) can he be picked out for shooting seperatly as if within 3" so gets a 4+ "look out sir" roll,
is he treated as being in the unit and so is treated exactly like a character within the unit and therefore can only picked out by special means (sniper).
Thanks in advance for the clarification. It will help me decide on if i equip my bsb in full plate and barded steed or AoMI
As I understand things...he cannot be targeted separately, in terms of "my slingshot squigs are chucking acorns at him," (as opposed to at the unit), but, in the event that a wound does end up on him (cannonball rolls over him, there are 23 shots hitting him and the 20 guys he's with, whatever), he only gets the watered-down LoS! save...the other difference that I see is that the metal spell gehenna's hounds allows the targeted character to take LoS! saves...those would also be the weaker save...and so on.

+2 armor save but have a 50% chance of getting plastered by a cannonball. Now I see why you promote giving your BSB a ward save .
I am fairly sure that, regardless of base size, any character which is in a unit as opposed to fielded alone, gets a full 2+ LO,S roll, until the unit consist of less than 5 RnF models.
If you are a lone model, then yo get a 4+, but only if you have the same base size as the unit you are within 3" of.
