Just wondering. Do you use them? If so, what do you use and why? Have you seen any decent Unit fillers on the Interwebs or have any cool ideas of your own?
Basically............. I need some ideas and I want you to provide them for me. So, provide away.
I used loads of unit fillers when making my Empire. With units needing to be o much bigger than they used to and the move to infantry armies they saved me alot of money.
Firstly i had some spare ogres from a friends failed army attempt including 2 Maneaters, (the Pirate and Empire versions), so i have one in each of my Swordsmen units. Its only 4 models worth, but if you pose them right and give there base a little bit extra work like adding a barrel or somthing you can easily get up to 6 (3x2) or 9 (3x3) models out of an ogre. I also use a leadbelcher as one of my cannons.
If you would rather have Scenery, i think the Warhammer trees work very well sat in the middle of a unit. Take up alot of room and you can stick the odd shield or have empire items hanging from them etc. Ive seen it done and it looks prety good, its just transporting the trees about and not loosing all the leaves off them when you do pack them into a case etc (the leaves as you might have seen are all together in blocks so its not a hard task to stick them back on.
Walls and buildings work well in small amounts, say an ogre size base. any bigger and it starts to look a bit silly with the same building moving about in a unit. Trees you can get away with as you expect to find trees all over but a large building just makes it look like a diorama. but the odd pillar, or corner of a builing (i used the old 40K chapple type building corner from the old box set, and cut off an area with machine gun holes), looks quite good. I used York Stone Paving plasit sheets to base all my models so it looks like they are in a city so the small bits of building worked ok.
Also use the fillers you find in the Empire boxes like the Powder Monkey from the handgunners/crossbowmen and the Barrels from the cannon.
Hope this helps,
Cheers MrSalty. Aye I'm not fan of BIG pieces of scenery on bases let alone on units. It just looks weird when your model runs around the board carrying the same massive bit of slate with him.
I reckon I'll add a few Diorama sort of things to flesh out the theme a bit more. My Empire is based on Woodsmen so I think a few small trees and maybe a few Beastmen being put to their final rest would be a good few things. Maybe even a Cart carrying cut logs....
I've seen peasants pulling a wagon in the middle of a formation, it looked a bit odd...I've seen campfires, which would be fine in a static unit...what I haven't seen, to which you've already alluded, is anything that looks like it would naturally move with the unit. I do like the idea of random monstrous infantry models, provided they look suitably empire-y. I could see an odd ogre here or there agreeing to serve..., and one of those would look just fine on a 60x60 base, since the humans in "his" regiment would understandably be...reluctant to get within arm's reach? Haven't seen that done, though. As for myself, I'm content to churn out more staties...in the end, it should look pretty imposing to see multiple (I'm building up three existing ones, they were originally sized for the last edition, LOL) 40+ model regiments spammed onto the board with their 15-18 model detachments...

Many people in NZ take Unit Fillers and Conversions because they satisfy points criteria in the Painting/Presentation sections of Tournament Scoring. The biggest I have ever seen was a 10-man section of ruins with 2 models climbing through it in the middle of a 50-man unit of Maurauders.
It's become a bit of a running joke, quite frankly.

My army's mascot are boars, so I used one of the O&G boars, decorated with sufficient empire bits (shields, cherubs, bells, hammers and etc) and plopped one or two in each one of my units. Nothing says morale like your mascot

Hey, I was actually thinking of doing the same. Not with Boars though. With Bears. Have some big bears running around with Empire guys riding them or at least 'steering' them into battle with chains or spears.
You never know, with the new Empire book they might have monstrous mounts in there and the bear riders can ride to glory with rules!! That's it........ I'm buying some bears.
The mounts from the new ogre kingdoms make good unit fillers imo, they wuld be like unit/regimemtal mascots, or pack animals with spare kit. Just a thought
