i haven't really tried mortars in my armies but its mainly because i have been playing low point games.... how viable are our mortars in combat.... is the S3 enough to put dents in things?
Str3 isn't really that hot. The thing that makes Mortars awesome is the Large Template. They can hit an absolute shed load of enemy models and if those models are Skaven/Empire/Goblins/Elves/Marauders or any other T3 model with a low save you will shred them just on the amount of hits you do. Against T4 low armoured stuff like Orcs you can still do a fair bit of Damage but against things like Chaos Warriors who are T4 and pack a 3+ Save you'll ping off them........ so best to target something else.
Shadow Magic and Mortars is horrible though. Use withering to lower their Toughness down and suddenly those Mortars are wounding on 3+ or 2+ and that really makes people cry.
... Frinstance, I murdered 36 dark elf spearmen on the top of turn one with a pair of mortars in a recent game... And that's not an exceptional result, given that I had an engineer on hand to reroll scatter if needed.
