Recently purchased an army of 100 sprearmen,2 steamstanks,a couple of HQs. Besides me trying to decide on weather to keep the spears or rearm 50 HW&S/50Halberds, whats the best character(s) from 500 to 1000pts. I'm at a total lost between wizard, priest, or captain. I would appreciate any tip or advice on which characters best suits these pts. level & gear.
Well, spearmen are fairly universally acknowledged as useless, so rebuilding those is a first step I can agree with.
As for characters, you need a L4 mage, a BSB, and a LD9 character to serve as your army general. I prefer an arch lector for the job (no walter required!), but there's something to be said for generals of the empire. They cost more, but they're better in melee (which is NOT their purpose, but a nice benefit) and allow a statie unit to take a magic banner (for that, I like 30 crossbowmen with eternal flame). After that, a priest per melee regiment is a good use of points, and a naked engineer or two if you field significant artillery.
Beware of fielding two stanks, they're expensive for what they do, and nevertheless taking even one is borderline cheese... Two is very ayeiob and very cheesy at the same time. And if you take two stanks plus a walter, you deserve the label "order daemons," cause you're playing lawful good fatecrusher.
/edit/ at 500 points, a priest and a L2 mage, at 1k, add a bsb.
Thanks Marnepup, any suggestions for gear for the Mages? Priest/BSB/Captains I assume you'll gear for survivability & allow the unit to do the killing. As for the stanks, I'll probably only ever use one, unless I need fill pts. to meet a pt. level (but i feel the same, but who know maybe with the new book they'll change)
The best empire arcane item is the rod of power. The seal of destruction is also nice, and then there's the scroll. Other than that, I wouldn't bother with anything except for a 4++ on your L4 mage once you start fielding one (at 1500+)
