    Swordsmen, Halberdiers, or Spearmen?

i was leafing through the high elf army book yesterday when i realized that most armys have ONE average CC core troop. the empire seen to have 3. i was wondering which ones most people use. if you could post which and why that would be great. i have a unit of each and my personnal favoriteis swordsmen.

Swordsmen are the most popular from what I've read, due to Empire infantry tactics of getting charged and letting detachments do their work... (Swordmen are enduring buggers)

swordsmen - the default troops, generaly make the best core of an army.
spearmen - with the extra attacks are good against troops with stats like WS3 and T3 and under. so a lot of undead core, skinks, gnoblars.
    halberds - fluffy.
that's the thing about perfection, it can only get worse.

Halberds are good for exactly two reasons:
    1.They are fluffy
    2. If used as Detachments, they work very well against high Toughness troops.

And that's about it. As Parent Units, they suck, plain and simple. Keep them as Detachments and they'll work fine.

I generally use halberds but swordsmen are much more effective. I don't like using spearmen even if they are more useful than halberds. I don't know why, aesthetics I guess.

It has to be swordsmen because they can hold an enemy for long enough to let your detachments aided by surrounding units (on the next turn) to take out the enemy.

I just wanted to add my two cents, with literally no combat experience with Empire and my army still consisting of a wizard and 20 swordsmen....i think swordsmen are best as large parent units, with probably halberds and handgunners for detachments along with other supporting units like spearmen and knights.

    my first post, YAY......later

I'd have to say that swordsmen are the best, as they can take more hits than then spearmen or halberdiers.

that said I use halberdiers as detachments for my swordsmen becuase of thier higher strength. i also prefer to use them because it makes more sense to me fluff wise that the state troop regiments would have state troop detachments, not some peasent rabble that was organised just before the battle.

As for spearmen, I dont like the models, so I dont think i'll be using them any time soon
