Ugh dang friend. Too lazy to get a LO username.
I have a new friend (w00t) who wants to start playing warhammer. He is interested in the Empire and was wondering how he should start out. He wants to go for a balanced army. So if you guys could give suggestions on what to buy and how to play, that woulpd be great.
-Faces dark elves, bretts, and lizardmen
-1000 point armies.
P.S. - Is the battalion a good buy? It seems obvious, but some people say battalions for other armies are a waste.

Selling Dwarf Battalion - Empire + Chaos Army Book - SM Codex - 40k stuff
The Battalion is a good buy, IMO. It gives an all rounder list, which can be added to nicely with an extra character and a few Core/Special units, like Greatswords, or more Cannons. It should bring him up to around 1000 points.
Yea the battalion is a good buy. Then just add some more swordsmen or halberders and free company. Although the 12 Knights in the Battalion are to many for my liking.
By day he fought with sword and shield.....
By night he fought with pen and parchment.....
He was....The Warrior Poet.......

Warhammer is one of the best things in this world...but it can't beat those pickles!!!
I would have to agree with WarriorPoet. The Empire Battalion is a good place to start though the quantity of knights is on the high side. As long as you don't intend to field a mostly to all Cavalry force, then 12 knights is probably the most you will ever need.Originally Posted by warrior poet
Despite how GW sells them, sticks of 5-6 knights or blocks of 10-12 knights are the way to go.
Starting with a Battalion and supplementing with additional boxes of Soldiers-of-the-Empire and Militia (Free Company) would be the way to go.
Literally, get a good Core together before you start diluting the effectiveness of your force with things like Greatswords and other Special and Rare choices.

Go for the Battalion unless you are really fickle at what you like to paint cause then you'll never finish painting them. My advice is split the knights into 2 groups of six because a unit of 12 is a big juicy target for war machines.
