I don't know Whether to get Valten Exaulted of of Sigmar or Valten Champion of sigmar (Valten 2 , Correct me If I'm Wrong).
Because I'm thinking if I get number2 I can put in a unit of knights and I don't know if the extra points and extra lord choice is worth the steed and the Armour (which I don't know the rules of.
First off, the Valten characters are Special Characters and will require the permission of your opponent and may be restricted in tournaments.
The rules for Valten2 are in the Chronicles 2004.
The rules for Valten3 are in the Storm of Chaos supplement.
I have never used Valten3 but the abilities don't seem to be worth 3 times the amount of Valten2's points cost.
I just had my first taste with Valten2 in a 4-player game where each army was 2250 points. Empire/High Elves vs. Orcs/Orcs.
I felt my deployment was horrible and that the game would be over on turn 2 or 3 but I got off a few lucky Cannon shots, my Wizard Lord was able to stop Orc magic cold and Valten2's adding CR to nearby combats was amazing.
For what it's worth, I never got to spring the Against All Odds rule on my opponent as I usually already had outnumber and never got flanked.
In that large of a game my Lord slot was obviously taken by the Wizard Lord. Since Valten has a higher leadership than the Wizard Lord, he got to be my General. Finally, since Valten2 takes two Hero slots I used my last slot for a Captain-BSB.
The key is to have two or three thick blocks of infantry bunched up together to provide a solid mass headed into the enemy line (detachment, Swordsmen, Halbrediers, Spearmen, detachment)*. I prefer 24 or 25-man blocks of infantry with 10-man detachments.
I then put Valten2 in the Halbrediers and the BSB in the Spearmen.
Since Empire forces are so needy of Leadership, it doesn't make sense to put your General (i.e. highest leadership) running about with the Knights when he could stay home with the infantry.
The obvious exception would be when taking a Grand Master with a higher proportion of knights in your army list. Then infantry, if any, are just there to guard your artillery and not the mainstay of your force.
I hope this answers your question.
*A block each of swords, halbreds and spears, because this is what I own. However, 3 blocks of swords would probably be the best due to their stats and 3 blocks of halbreds would be the fluffiest.

The thing in having Valten as the General is that it has absolutely no benefits at all, only disadvantages. (As V can't confer his Leadership anywhere but the unit he has joined.)
Well, it does have one benefit. Just try killing the General for extra VP XD
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
I don't know whether to put him on a 1 man misson or put in a unit of 8 Knights.
