It needs to have unit strength 5 in order to pull all the flanking bonuses and so forth, so it seem key to have enough models that after they get chopped into a bit, you still have 5 left. This seems to me a reason to have 10 Free company rather than 2 squads of 5, cuz they're fragile, and you want them to get that bonus in.
So how many would you use? Say on a squad of 25 swordsmen?
Always take either 10-12 as a detachment, they'll last longer and be more effective when they get in combat.
I would never do bellow 24, you need to have a good staying power in combat and take numbers.
If you are using one detachment of FC then 10-12, if you are using two detachments the 8 each. FC and halbreds are your best dtachments
10 to twelve is good with one detachment but if i'm using two i will drop at lease one back to eight.
