I've been thinking of putting together an Empire army, either at 1000 points or possibly at 2000 using some of my dwarves as Free Company detachments. If I do this I will most likely be using some cavalry, most likely both Knightly Orders and some Kislev. What I don't know is how large these units should be.
What is the standard size for cavalry? 5x1? 4x2? 5x2? 4x3?
yeah Id go with 6x1 and 5x2
What you are we once were. What we are you will become!!!
I always go with 6x1, as you get maximum damage for minimum price generally meaning more cannon!!i usually use my units for flanks attacks rather than full on chares so i dont generally edd the extra rank bonus from 5x2, but used differantly i can see the merit.
1 x 6 Knights of the white wolf are make formitable flankers, and can break nearly anything. I think knightly orders work better in 5 x 2.

Hi, in my current 2k army, I use 1 unit of 10 in 2x5(inner circle knights and 1 unit of 5 knights give both full command just to help win combat, the 10 unit allway win combat most of the time anyways i gave them the warbanner and a captain with them to just for extra killing power, they destoryed a unit of 25 skeletons in round of combat with a blood dragon vampire thrall leading them.
I use 8 knights in a 2x4 formation with full command, they aren't game-winners, but they can make the enemy think twice about attacking nearby units, as no-one wants a knight charge in the flank.
I dunno where your from, and whether you hav acess to it, but theres quite a good article on heavy cav tactics and how to take them in this months WD. Unfortunately thats about it for good articles but hey...
