I'm about 1/3 done painting my Empire army, and am starting to get an army list put together (I play Ocs 'n Goblins regularly and am just getting ready to battle with Empire).
My question to all you veteran Empire generals is this, are detachments useful?! If so, when, why and how would you use them...
Well for hand to hand purposes they are really good since they can countercharge to
A) deny rank bonuses, and attack before the chargers.
I use swordsman as a parent unit since they are the best for recieving charges with the high WS and 4+ save
And i use Halberds as detachments to kill stuff.
I dont use missle weapon detachments Except when i have a parent unit of handguns with two detachments of handguns, thats scary.

You are; Empire (truly)

Detachments are indeed very useful for empire players, a really good special rule. They've frustrated my armies before..
Though, I tend now to just charge the detachment rather than the main unit and be done with it. Also, they spread out your battle line a lot. Still useful I'd say.
Personally i never leave home without my detachments as i find them invaluable. Whether wanting a bit of a punch in combat (militia or halberdiers) or some softening fire (crossbowmen or hangunners) they are great! (no tony the tiger pun intended)...... You could even use a detachment to ensure that you get the charge (using a small skirmishing archer unit to flee in the face of the enemy)......... GET DETACHMENTS!!
ok, rant over..... Sorry.
Put quite simply, detachments rock!
Most of the reasons have already been given on this thread to get them, but i'd still like to impress upon you how useful they are.
Empire foot units always seem to take charges, rather than make them, and having a detachment to swing round and hit the enemy in the flank, right in the sweet spot, is too good an oppertunity to miss. It can turn the flow of the fight against some harder stuff (or at least help hold them up...), and speeds up some of the really sluggish combats between two similar strength units, like classic empire vs undead slugathons.
In short, the seemingly unanimous vote of this thread is YES, GET DETACHMENTS!
Do Empire players have to reveal that certain units are detachments to their opponent at the beginning of the battle?!Originally Posted by strewart
Yes, as the detachments are deplyed at the same time as the parent units, can't get around around that i'm afraid.
detachments are probably the best thing about empire
Life is too serious to be taken seriously
I agree, a detachment make it's parent unit truly powerfull, it's an automatic flank charge when made correctly. Every parent units that you field should have at least 1 detachment.Originally Posted by ozzfan
You can always leave your H2H detactments about 4-6 inches behind your main detatchment. That will make it a bit more difficult to charge them (unless your enemy is playing cavalry).
I've noticed that all of the Empire troops that can use the detatchment rule are charged an extra point per man. Basically, a Halberdier would normally be:
3 points for being a human
1 point for halberd
1 point for light armor
5 points total
The extra point is for the detatchment rule.
So if you aren't using detatchments, you're throwing away about 16% of the model's cost right there.
