Recently, one of my brothers lost interest in warhammer. He had about 1000 point of empire, and he is selling all plastic infantry at 45p per model (or about 65cents) all artillery at between £2-£5 (about $3-$7.50) and his metal mages for £1.50 (about $2). So, this is what I could get:
20 Free Company
Battle Wizard (mounted)
So I could get a 1000 point army for £36.45! (or around $50)
But I have better things to waste my money on and anyway I don't want to buy some models; I just wanty a border patrol army, or a small mercenary force, say 400 points. What should I take of this before my brothers and friends snatch it up?

Well, if your after a border patrol force or small mercenary force then,
1- the force needs to be compact and/or fast
2- For you to be a succesful mercenary you need a 'useful' force,
I would suggest taking as follows:
Mounted battle wizard
Captain or General (if one is mounted that would be good)
20 free company
Well, Captain.Snowball does have a "OK" list, you might want to choose some units that are a necessity for most empire armys. My board patrol army I'd recommend would be:
Captain- Pretty cheap, good for leading your Swordsmen give him Metronic armour, and your good to go.
Swordsmen - you may want to bulk them up later to 20-25 if you plan to do other matches other than board patrol. They have a good armour save, and good WP.
Free Company - these are excellent, and I recommend to take these to every match you play. They are great detachments for your parent units, and have two attacks. They are a bargain for there price.
Handgunners - These are decent since they have good armour piecing effects, but they are really bad in combat, take these as detachments.
Cannon - reliable, strong, good pick
I don't believe you can pick rares in Board Patrols, but correct me if I'm wrong.
If you want a more Mercneary theme, I'd suggest you get some Dogs or War units, maybe some pistoleers since there are tons of young men who have a hunger for treasure or maybe some crossbow men.
Its just a thought
