I'm in the process of rebuilding my Empire and i would like to include a decent size unit of Greatswords but i am having doubts over their 'mixed abilities'.
- WS 4 and a 4+ save they will hit and save as much as a X point swordsmen.
- To counter that they will be striking at strength 5 but strike last at T 3.
- Leadership 8 and Stubborn
- Can carry a magic standard
Is the five point different between a X point Greatsword and a X point Swordsmen, worth it?
I can see the value in them as a small flank guard unit, i think their cost/status rules them out of the speed hump/tar pit roles but do they have the guts to justify the massive points difference between say 30 swords and 30 greatswords?
Greatswords will only score on average 1-2 more wounding hits than a swordsmen unit with a similar frontage so the points difference must be the from the stubborn ability. And if i give my BSB the banner of Sigismund for X making the unit stubborn (eg the swordsmen) then i will be saving myself some 90 points and that will pay for the captain with those points and have some to spare!! (maybe a bit confusing, just trying not to include 'raw' point value, sorry if you hate math)
I my musings i cannot see them performing as a main line unit with the same efficiency as the other state troops, however with character support and a few choice selections of magic items the effectiveness could be heightened. An example of this would be the Sword of Sigismund on an EC or Captain. But once again increasing the cost of the overall unit which in real terms dies just as easily as a X point Swordsmen.
Seem like a bit of a rant, but i am hoping to draw on experienced Empire Generals out there to show me the light when it comes to the 'Elite' of the Empires forces....
well.... in my usage of greatswords, my enemies think they are insanely good, but that works for me cause well, they see it fit to send all their magic and shooting to them(thats a reason to take the banner of arcane protect, which erks a lot of peeps). which means knights and detachments arent being shot. they are also a special choice road block(unlike the rare choice road block of flagies). thats my opinion.
another reason people take them, is to make a good flank holding unit, while flagies hold the other. and they are also good at striking back if they charge. honestly i would only field them against chaos or undead, but against other armies, i think pistolers and cannons do the job fine. and that is also my opinion
a final reason to take them, is... they are really cool models, AND THATS A FACT!:w00t:
Darks Elves 6000ptsWood Elves 500pts (WIP)
Imperial Guard 5000pts
I was thinking something along the lines of a scare tactic unit. 30 Greatswords, FC, Banner of Arcane Warding with a EC leading them, fully armoured and mounted with a Holy Relic and Sword of Sigismund. Hard but looks harder than it looks and with a such a number of points invested in it any opponent would target it just for the chance to gain those kinds VP.
And your right the models are awesome.
Supposedly in the new book they will be -5 points, while other state troops will be -1. So if this is to be true, than you only pay one point more than you would for a regular Swordsman. I see this as a great change, and one probably made for the reasons you just stated.
