...with swordsmen when you can have halberdiers?
For the same cost as a swordsman, you can equip a halberdier with a shield.
So a halberdier equipped with a shield costs the same as a swordsmen and has the option of attacking either with his hw/shld combo for the same armor save as a swordsmen or attacking with his halberd for higher strength.
Plus, halberdier unit upgrades are cheaper than swordsmen upgrades.
To me it seems a halberdier is more versatile and a better value.
The swordsmen tops the halberdier only in WS and I.
What do you think?
Against (the very common) WS3 warriors, they hit on a 3+, very useful. Plus that extra Initiative can come in useful for prolonged combats.
I supppose it depends on your opponents. Who do you play against? If you face Chaos or Lizardmen, then the high Strength wil be useful, but against Elves or Night Gobbos, the rest of your statline will be invaluable.
I don't have an Empire army, but I've always been tempted. The new book and models are really getting my attention, so I'm just playing around with ideas.
I play against VC, O&G, OK, Skaven, HoC, WEs, Brets, LM, and Dwarfs most often.
I think the WS and I are the reason why I'd go for swordsmen. Since the new Empire book came out I've been thinking about what kind of list I would make as an Empire player. So I've been trying to weigh up spearmen, halbediers and swordsmen.
What I don't like about halbediers is that when you switch to the higher strength, you drop -2 armour save. The CR you get from an extra kill or two could easily be evened out by taking more casualties back.
Besides, against most bog standard infantry, swordsmen will be 3s then 4s and halbediers 4s then 3s. So wounds look as though they even out anyway, only you get the better save (and I). Personally I think swordsmen are slightly better, but I have no first hand experience
You could always do swordsman with Halbedier detacthments, Thats what they are usually use for at least from what I've read in various tactica's.
I like your idea. That'd give me the best of both worlds. So do you recommend one or two detachments per parent unit? If you use two, do you make one of them a missile unit?
Great swords with a BSB look pretty darned good.
And I like the idea of priests for hatred in combat.
There no point going over why swordsmen are better than halbs as its all been covered anyways i take 1 unit of 25 state troop type, I think there all good halbeadiers beening the hardest to master with low save but high strenght they do surprise me sometimes like a taking on a unit 25 plague monks and managing to beat them in 1 round of combat then running the lot down thats the best achivement i have pulled off.
And like Angel_Legion mentioned halbs and swordsmen make great detachments better than free company in my opinion even tho they throw out 10 attacks a turn it doesnt beat high ws or strenght or a 4+ armour save but thats just me.
im actually thinking of trying to have 25 soldier blocks of Halberdiers, with 10 man swordsmen detachments. Its like getting best of both worlds. I also think that if your going fluff wise, you need to take halberdiers, because "their the most common" blah, blah, blah....... but the swordsmen are probably better, just because of the higher armor save.

Don't undervalue free co. as a detatchment though. They are good for CC oriented foes. They get lots of bang for their buck since their so cheap and manage 2 attacks each. Really allows alot more damage when they flank you.
As for swords and Halbs, they are like apples and oranges. It's already been said- it deals mostly with who you're fighting.
One detachment should be missile troops. Lots of small missile detatchments are better than a couple big units because it gives you more fire-control, and you benefit from standing and shooting almost 100% of the time.
Is it true though that you can now give Free Co. detachments of Free Co? Or is it just another GW Tactica Typo?
Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.
