If you are starting out, this is the thread to read. I am hereby asking all seasoned Empire players to come forth with their thoughts on starting an Empire army.
The purpose of this topic is to preven a swarm of "hi, im new to Empire. Got any starter tips?" and "What units should I get?" type posts, and gather all such stuff riiiight in here.
So, new aspireing Empire generals, feel free to ask questions about starting an Empire army in this topic, and all Empire generals who knows their army well, feel free to share your ideas on starting such a force with the new kids.
All other posts that i feel should belong in this topic, will be deleted.
Well....seeing as how the WE codex wont be out for another year (coinciding with me leaving for college,so im sure i'll have TONS of time),and i wanna play a shooty army,i was thinking about maybe empire. They have cannons and such, and handgunners etc. so i was thinking they might be worth playing. Any remarks or advice would be appreciated.
OK, here are a few principles which I, and other Empire generals, generally agree upon (if you'll forgive the pun. ). I'm avoiding anything remotely controversial, and just sticking with the commonly accepted wisdom. If you want any points clarified, just holler.
1) Halberdiers blow - avoid them 99% of the time.
2) Swordsmen and Spearmen are your best core choices
3) Free Company are your best detatchments
4) Always take 1 unit of 5 or 6 Huntsmen (no frills)
5) Never use 8 Knights. Use 5 or 6 Knights normally, occasionally you can use 1 big unit of 10 or 12.
Those are the big 5. most Empire Armies fall into 1 of 3 types...
Type 1)The Gunline
This army has handgunners, lots of 'em, plus artillery, and some crossbows or archers.
Tips to remember: use huntsmen, and small (5 man) detatchments of archers to marchblock your enemy. Pistoliers are also useful for this, as is a captain on a pegasus. Trick is to deploy back a little, and slow them down as much as possible, to give your guns the maximum time to whittle them away. Remember to keep at least one decent defensive infantry unit (Spearmen or Swordsmen) plus support detatchments in reserve for when they get too close.
Type 2)The Crusade
This is the cavalry army: lots of Knights, backed up by Pistoliers. This can be effective but is risky; with no stable line, any artillery will be easy pickings. best avoided, unless you are playing a particular scenario.
Type 3Old Reliant
This is your best bet, especially staring out. a little of everything: that's what Empire excels at. Take 1 or 2 decent blocks of infantry (spearmen and/or swordsmen) with some detatchments (FC preferably). One or two units of Knights, and / or pistoliers, plus one or two artillery pieces. then one "tarpit" / tough unit. (Greatswords or Flagellants). this is a versatile army that will work well for a refused flank / hammer and anvil.
I recommend aiming for Type 3 for your first 1000-1500 points, play a bot, then take it form there. Helpful?
Yes! That was actually quite helpful thank you. The guy to get me looking at empire used a brilliant strategy of the gunline, where he was able to make vectors of killzones, bait the enemy into them, and demonlish them with his handgunners and artillery. I will do what you reccomend. Im going to get the army book tommorow or friday. After that i will have about 70 dollars to spend on empire. Do you reccomend using cannons or mortars to start off? Im not sure what other artillery empire has.
I go for Cannon over Mortar's, at least at first: my rationale is that you have lots of things to deal with Infantry: Hangunners, Archers, X-Bows, Knights, Infantry...
Whereas, you have very little to deal with Giants, or Chariots etc. that's where the Great cannon are...great! (again with the puns, sorry!
If you use a little ingenuity as well, you can make up a mortar and cannon from the sprue...you'll only have three crew, but you can chop and change which artillery piece you use. (TIP: Don't put wheels on the mortar).
I recommend getting the battallion boxed set: it'll give you a core unit of Spearmen, a unit of handgunners which you can use as two detachments, or another core unit. It also has a unit of Knights and a Cannon/Mortar: it's demmed good value!
After that, a box of Militia for some Free Company and Huntsmen...and then the rest, is up to you...
Not wishing to be argumentative, I think that Halberdiers are good - against certain troops. My halberdiers, backed up by 10 Free company and 10 Handgunners/Swordsmen/more Free Company, (in detchments) excel against orcs and other high toughness troops (I've only tested orcs though). Give them shields, full command and watch them take everyone on. A hero inside them really helps, if you can.

Well i like a well rounded force, i like a mix of it all, a nice core of ranged weaponry, some solid reliable uints, a more mobile unit, and something that has a hard punch, my ideal force cosists of
A good healthy 16man minimum spearmen unit
14 man minimum handgunners
7 Knights (inner circle)
and either another Cannon, or more spear men, your choice really!!
that way you can recive a charge, fight at range then counter attack, make a strong attack, with reninforcements and ranged support, make flanking attackts etc etc!!!

i have just started empire and need a basic hero and 2 core choices, my freind said to get an engineer with a long rifle what do you think and some spear men
I wouldn't go for a Engineer as ypur first hero, he needs to be used with war machines. I'd first get a Captain (combat hero), arm him however you wish. But decide if you're going to take cav or not, if so you get to choose whether to mount him or not.
As for the core I'd go for spearmen first, a big block of spearmen and one of swordmen. Then get detatchments of halberdiers and handgunners for each, after that bulk out on other stuff. More hero's (wizards), war machines and cav, more units etc.
thanks for the help so a captain 20-30 spearmen 20-30 swordsmen and then anything that suits me
