Well I have been pondering over this a bit (along with other things but thats a different matter). Any ways would it be benifcial if I should try to make some room so that my spearment can have shields or would they do just fine without them?
My main oppenets will probally be Orcs, Dwarfs, Orges, and maybe Bretonians (though Orc player is going to Austrila for awhile anyways). So to me it would be helpful against the Orcs and Dwarfs though maybe not the Orges so much (I think not too much expereince there).
So to shield or not to shield?
Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.

i would go no, because probably all those armies will have some form of strength 4 or higher, effectively making your shields useless. Depending on the size of your units as well, its probably better just to stick with maybe 4-5 extra guys in the back.

I'd recommend having shields. If just for filling in points for the battle, and besides if you deal with anything else other than those enemies. You'll be able to get a better armor save than normal. But that's just my thoughts about it.
I'll be damned before the soldiers of the Emperor are just left to rot!

If it doesn't work with the Emperor. Then it's been officially Karmooned!!!

I'd take the shield. It's a very cheap upgrade, and if you aren't fighting against all S5 opponents, you'll be really glad you have it.
Having played Vampire Counts for 3 years (where a skeleton with spear, shield, light armor costs 11 points! not to mention the fact that they're crapier fighters than empire spearmen), 6 points a spearmen is not gonna inhibit you much.

And never EVER forget that you dont have use the spears. If, say, the ogres charge but you outnumber them heavily, heaps more ranks, and think youd have a damn good chance against static combat res, use hand weapon, shield, light armour. 4+ armour save (would become 5+) saves 1/3 of the wounds caused, and could save the combat. It really does depend, but play it by ear, and use whatever you think has the best chance of winning.
There's no reason not to take sheilds on your spearmen. Spears are one handed weapons afterall, you get a higher AS than halberdiers, plus when you're charged you get the 2nd ranks extra attacks.
