I've got a game coming up (my second for the summer campaign) against a 2,000 point High Elf force... Any suggestions on how to handle it?
As for what I've got available, I've got two large blocks of Swordsmen, a few Handgunner and Halberdier detachments, some Pistoliers and Outriders, 20 Crossbowmen, about 10 or so Knights, 2 cannons, a General, and a few Warrior Priests. I can always add a couple of things, but I'd like to try to make the most out of what I've got, if I can!
If you have a Hellblaster, use that. Elves are only toughness 3 and its just a bloody massacure if you get a good roll with it . Knights also play big whenever going against elves, I know because I experienced the hurt first hand when I used to play Elves .
IMO it would be a good idea to go with the Hellstorm rocket battery instead of the Hellblaster with its nerf and all. The large blast and good enough strength to wound those expensive elves on 2+ is priceless. Plus if you take two its double the pain on them and its not like your using those slots that much anyways.
Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.

Mortars are also good.
If you have only warrior preists then buy up all the items that give magic resistance.
High Elf magic is incredibly potent. I would also bego, borrow or steal a wizard and give him 2 dispel scrolls.
Crossbowmen are great against elves because of the great range.
Also, let the high elf spear blocks charge your parent units. not that you'll have much of a choice. high elf spears fight in 3 ranks when charged, so its actually better to let them charge u. if you can get a detatchment on there flank u can beat them.
yeah, and knights are great against high elves.

Well it all depends on the type of high elves.
knights go down quickly to repeater bolt throwers.
Handgunners are outclassed by the high elf archers. I would try crossbowmen, then they have to get into your range to shoot you.
The hellblaster is always good for wiping out units of knight but I do like the potential of the hellstrom as well. Mortars are a good investment against T3 elves as well.
Wizards are essential in warhammer. First thing you should do is go out and buy a couple. If you aim 5 inches away you'll hit on a 2,4,6 or 8. That leaves a 10 which would hit a huge army (which elves aren't). A misfire wouldn't hit with any warmachine so that shouldn't be considered special with the helstorm.i don't see why you would use the hellstorm as you will never hit anything with it. go with the hellblaster.
The othr disadvantage is that the helstorm misfire table is slightly worse than the mortar one.
You will hit less models than you would with a mortar but you are hitting on S5 instead of S3 (w/AP) which I think evens out. All things being equal I would rather a helstorm than a mortar. The mortar is much cheaper however it is a special choice and the helstorm is a rare. So you don't have to give up anything to take the helstorm.
A helblaster will average somewhere less than 15 shots. The same amount of points in handgunners will average 14 shots. The difference is S5 vs S4. You pay for that through a 1/2 chance of misfire. On a misfire you have a 1/3 chance of blowing up and a 1/3 chance of becoming useless for the next turn as well.
So in reality it will average much less shots than handgunners would.
Other considerations of course would be how easy it is to kill and how much space it takes up vs the handgunners.
Now to compare helstorm vs helblaster? A helblaster if it doesn't misfire will probably get about 5 hits. A helstorm if it lands on target will get a lot more vs a block of troops.
Personally I would rather not have my warmachine blow up and the helblaster has a good chance of doing so.
Also, the helblaster has a much shorter range than the helstorm. We think alike.Handgunners are outclassed by the high elf archers. I would try crossbowmen, then they have to get into your range to shoot you.
crossbowmen > handgunners
