I was wondering if it is worth getting a Master Engineer with a Hochland Long Rifle and using him as a sniper to take out unit champions. I have two units of handgunners but I want to rather give them Repeater handguns. What would be my best option here, give one of my handgunners a Hochland Long Rifle or get and engineer with one and use him with my warmachine aswell as sniper?
Short answer, no, its not worth it.
You are far better off giving it to the marksmen, same ballistic skill and a lot cheeper. You can have several marksmen for cost of one engineer.
The hochland rifle allows him to shoot at a different target to his unit, it is also great at taking out wizards in units etc. A couple of well placed shots from the hochlands can ruin your opponents magic phase.
I think that engineers just aren't woth it. There are too many other characters that bring so much more to the army.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
A handgunner champion w/repeater handgun costs more than 3 handgunners and since it is 1 model vs 3 it makes them easier to panic.
You're looking at 85 pts for an engineer w/ hochland long rifle. You could almost get another cannon for that. 2 cannons will hit more than 1 w/an engineer. If you use the engineer's reroll ability he cannot fire his weapon that turn. You could get an entire unit of handgunnerse for the cost of that engineer.
Engineers are never worth taking and I think the only useful special weapon for handgunner champions is the HLR. If you're going to take it though make sure you take a pair of them.
