s a bit of a rant, but also more observation and opinion. Its just that ever since the newest books in 7th edition were released, special characters no longer require the permission of your opponent to be used. I know, they are mostly balanced - or supposedly - but now it seems you can't go three steps without an army having a special character in it. Something which I feel ruins the battle. I don't want to have to face Teclis or Mannfred in a 2000pt battle week in and week out. And I shouldn't have to!

I think that GW have taken a step back in terms of this ruling. It is my opinion that special characters ruin the game, if used all the time. Personally, I never plan to use one, unless its in a game of over 3000pts, a special campaign, special scenario or I had previously agreed on it with my opponent. I understand GW have taken steps to balance the rules for them, so the permission is now just defunct and it was likely that many opponents would have refused to fight them at any point (who'd fancy fighting 6th ed Teclis?). I can see why, but at the same point its now dumbed a lot of list down. There are many lists where the list is built around a special character - I can imagine Mannfred is very popular for VC, or the Thorek gunline for Dwarfs - and this is one of my main dislikes. It shouldn't be this way. In my mind a special character is just something extra and fun to have once in a while, and using them each game is lazy, boring and lacks fun/imagination. Why build a character when you can get a special character for more cost, but with special rules and would do the job better?

My other point, linking in with Elazar's post on fluffy armies, is that it is much more fun to build your own character. It raises more challenges than the cookie-cutter hero from the book, and you can add your own background to them. I have always found this to be a great part of the hobby, building an army and living with it. As you play, it begins to take on its own personality and honour roll. Its not "Remember when Teclis burnt that Treeman to a crisp?" and more "Remember when Leiun managed to get that lucky fireball off and killed the treeman?" Something you can get behind and enjoy - building their history.

Admittedly everyone has their own tastes, but I personally never plan to take a special character for any my armies unless its once in a while and for a bit of fun. I urge you to do the same.

This is probably the hardest category to choose from - the 10 best Heavy Support choices. There are just so many good choices out there I'm having problems trying to fit them in. So instead of trying to cram them all into the top10, I've decided to list the....

Top 15 Heavy Supports

15. Daemon Prince - very scary when kitted-up but also very expensive.

14. Killa Kans - 3 dreadnoughts for about the cost of a vindicator? I'll take 9 please.

13. Space Wolf Long Fangs - the only static unit that deserves a top15. A great value and can target 2 separate targets.

12. Vindicator - AV13 S10 demolisher shot...all for $1.15. It's criminally priced.

11. Battlewagon - the best ork transport. Where can you get AV14 for only 90pts (before upgrades)?!? There's nothing scarier than 6 battlewagons w/deff rollas filled with ork boyz and nobz coming your way.

10. Fire Prism - lean, mean, fast combined-shooting machine.

9. Carnifex - the living tank. There's nothing quite as scary as a godfex with 5W, T7, 2+ saves. The only monstrous creature that will hurt even a monolith.

8. Dark Eldar Ravager - fast, cheaper than almost any other heavy support here, and scary good. Quite fragile, but in a raider-spam DE army, the ravager may not even be the primary concern.

7. Obliterator - the only top10 heavy selection that's neither vehicle nor monstrous creature. One of the most versatile heavy choices. There's 2 reasons why Chaos marines are such a great tournamnet army. Lash is one. This is the other.

6. Soulgrinder - the best walker in all of 40k. Fleet, AV13, 2 DCCW's, great weapon options, immune to shaken/stunned...it has no flaw except being non-venerable.

5. Leman Russ - the most versatile tank in 40k. It's very durable, and you have a russ for any and all occasions, whether anti-infantry, anti-tank or both. The scary part is that you can spam up to 9 of them in a guard army

4. Land Raider/LR variant (w/updated PotMS) - it's expensive, but if used properly could be very good. The new Power of the Machine Spirit is so good it's almost criminal. Almost essential to certain armies like the Grey Knights. For them, it's the difference between a mediocre army and a good army (I didn't say great...)

3. Witch Hunter Exorcist - it's a steal for it's price. Imagine 6 48" S8 AP1 shots with AV13 front armor. And it's cheaper than a lot of the vehicles here in the top15. Essential to the success of any Sisters army.

2. Tau Hammerhead (Railhead) - arguably the single most dangerous tank in all of 40k at a price too good to be true. Throw in some upgrades (i.e. disruption pods, multi-tracker, targeting array) and it becomes scary good.

1. Monolith - the most durable tank in all of 40k. It's got both anti-infantry and anti-tank firepower. More importantly, it allows the army a 2nd chance to live as well gives them the mobility that they sorely need. Arguably, it does more for the Necron army strategically than any other heavy support does for theirs.

Honorable mentions

Basilisk & variants - versatile long-range tank. Too bad they're as fragile as a chimera.

Broadsides - the only thing scarier than a railhead are 3 broadsides in cover or with shield drones. Horrendously expensive when kitted-up though.

Defiler - a good value. A tough walker that can dish out large pie plates to boot.

Predator - versatile AV13 vehicle w/3 lascannons for tanks or autocannon + heavybolters for swarms.

Wraithlord - tough, tough mofo. Too bad he's too slow and will get popped by a missile launcher.

It's time for me to move on from the realm of Games Workshop and on to a new game. I'm tired of their ridiculous price increases, the attitude in stores, and their newly brought to light issues with IP. A letter to FUMBBL was enough to get me riled up, but a letter to LO was the final straw for me. I no longer support them as a company, and I will be selling every GW model I own (with the exception of one, which I will be painting for Secret Santa) and starting a new game system if I remain in tabletop gaming.

So, I'd like some suggestions. I would like this not to turn into an anti-GW thread, as we have several of those (which, ironically enough, used to annoy me) and I simply want to be given some advice on a new game to turn to.

My first instinct is to turn to Privateer Press, either Warmachine, Hordes or indeed both, but I'm not certain just yet. What other non-GW games are good?

And, if I were to turn away from tabletop wargames, what other games (aside from video gaming, as I just bought MW2 and it's epic!) and hobbies would you all suggest?

Cheers for any thoughts.

My local club is getting ready to host a WH40K tournament. The owner is thinking along the lines of:

"At this stage I'm thinking:

- early December
- open list
- 1500 pts
- 1st Place prize
- Best Sportsman
- $20 entry (same as the Fantasy tournament)

Things to consider;

- 1 or 2 days
- number of games
- etc"

I'm just after some input from some tournament goers (the friendly club kind, not uber competitive) as to how we should go about this to make it the best experience for everyone.

Thanks,

The idea came to me having left a rant in a recent thread concerning a letter to LO from GW.

Initially, i'm really just intrigued into gauging interest in my "campaign" really, basically wondering how many people already ignore the idiots who leave their tainted mark on everyone's favourite hobby. I can imagine that this thread will become full of frustration (from vets especially lol).

Ok, so the idea is that i'm going to attempt to lead a "Boycott of idiocy", as stated in the title. Post (sign up) in this thread stating your agreement and commitment to the cause (if you agree and are willing of course ;) ).

Ready? Then repeat after me...

I hereby declare that:
- While i am happy to spend money on GW product, i do not necessarily agree with the amount i am forced to pay in order to partake in the hobby
- I refuse to buy into White Dwarf while it remains a shadow of its former self, and will not buy a single issue until the quality of the content has returned from its current adverts back to quality gaming articles
- I refuse to buy into any attempt by GW to create an "awesome spin-off" that will inevitably fall flat on its face in a matter of weeks (examples include Mighty Empires, War of the Ring, etc)

Ok, to some this may sound stupid or whatever, possibly a tad OTT, but thats the idea really, and the point is that id like to gauge opinion on this issue. If its as much as i expect it could be then we could look at putting something together to forward to the guys at GW in an attempt to improve the current state of the hobby for all.

So, your support, thoughts and opinions below please (being sure to stick to forum rules of course)

Although he cheats, he does it in a way, that should we call him out, we would embarass him/her and feel sorry for the old fool. For the simple fact that he is about 10 years our senior, and a really good friend.
I was just wondering if anyone has had the same trouble before and if anyone knows how to go about stopping this, before he comes across one of the more violence inclined players that we often see tarnish our beloved games.

Oh! the "cheating" that is done is simple little things such as... magic casting values, wrong weapon skills/strength/toughness...etc....

This is my list of the 10 best Fast Attack choices right now in the game of 40K. Considering all factors - abilities, stats, costs, etc. - but most importantly, how much of an impact it has on your army and even the entire game.

Top 10

10. Chaos Raptors (Jump Infantry) - of all the MEQ jump infantry, they stand out even though they cost more because 1) you can have 20 in a squad, 2) dual-meltas and 3) icons.

9. Witch Hunter Seraphims (Jump Infantry) - the most expensive Jump Infantry but hey...they do tricks. Lots of it...

8. Necron Destroyer (Jetbike) - fast and great firepower combined with We'll Be Back, though they cost an arm and a leg.

7. Hellhound Squadron (Fast Vehicle) - the best anti-horde vehicle in all of 40k. Can also pop tanks with its multi-melta option. Also includes the MEQ-killer banewolf and armor-destroyer chemdog.

6. Tie - Land Speeder / Tau Piranha (Skimmer) - great utility vehicles. Piranha has better front armor (11) but is open-topped, has worse BS (3), and it's fusion gun has only half the range of a multi-melta. However, the piranha can upgrade it's BS and also get other nifty wargear (i.e. disruption pods, seeker missiles). Land Speeders have better weaponry and are close-topped.

5. Tie - Land Speeder Storm / Ravenwing Land Speeder (Skimmer) - while inferior to the Land Speeder, I put the Land Speeder Storm ahead because it can become a scoring unit with scouts and is also a transport . The Ravenwing LS is a scoring unit. Period.

4. Thunderwolf Cavalry (Cavalry) - ohhhh....lookit da sharp teeth. Scary.

3. Ravenwing Attack Squadron (Bike) - scoring biker unit w/Fearless, Scout & teleport homers. Can also get a Ravenwing Land Speeder with it. If only they were a little cheaper...

2. Biker Marine Squad (Bike) - the most dependable biker unit that could also be a scoring unit. Much cheaper than Ravenwing and Combat Tactics has its advantages over Fearlessness.

1. Valkyrie/Vendetta (Skimmer) - the best skimmer in 40k that's not a Wave Serpent. Cheap as heck too and a transport to boot. You won't find any other vehicle in the game that has 3 twin-linked lascannons for only 130pts or can move 12" and still drop 2 big pie plates or can do a scout move and drop off infantry units while doing so. And the scary thing is that you can spam up to 9 of them! It makes an already great Guard army even that much better.

Honorable mentions

Ork Warbikers (Bike) - possible scoring biker unit. The only thing preventing them from the Top10 is the lack of reliable anti-tank.

Seekers of Slaanesh (Cavalry) - quite fragile, but wait til they charge you and each one hits you with 5 rending attacks. Now imagine 20 in a squad.

----------------- Added --------------------

Tau Pathfinders (infantry) - for a fast attack option, they're not very "fast". Add to the fact that they have no offense whatsoever and you're wondering how the heck did they make it as an honorable mention here. However, what they do do is make the army a heck of a lot better. One of the best "facilitator" units in 40K.

Space Marine Attack Bike - can easily make double it's points back. Though fragile, it is easily hidden and meant as a sacrificial unit unless with a squad of bikers.

----------------- Edited ---------------------

Removed Dark Eldar Reave jetbikes.

Removed Eldar Swooping Hawks.

Swapped the rankings of Necron Destroyers and Chaos Raptors & Seraphims.

Ok...now bring on the debates.
