Seeing as how the Gaunt's Ghosts novels drew me back into playing 40K, I eventually wanted to field them as an army. What digging I did here informed me that there were at least some rules for them (or Gaunt himself) in the 3E Codex, but that he/they didn't make the transition to 5E. So, with that in mind:

1) What is in the 3E IG codex for the Ghosts, and are there rules for them elsewhere?

2) What are some suggestions for obtaining/converting said Ghosts?

3) What are the chances of seein updated rules for the (if there aren't some already and I've just missed them)?

Appreciation in advance for help, and apologies if I'm posting in the wrong area and if any/all of my questions have been answered previously.

Im going for a mainly catachan themed army, just cause i love their background and style, and i love stracken and marbo...

Though going for a themed list, i would definitely like some hints on what to get from experienced guard players as, im no noob at 40k, but i need to know what works on the table, not just on paper....
So Basically, any good ideas on ANY units for guard to use, maybe any ideas for army lists would be gladly accepted... as im always looking to convert, and catachan converted creed does have a ring to it......

Or do you simply just order the conversion kit from FW?

Alright, so I finally decided on a theme for my IG: German, WWII-era military. With that in mind, It's a bit of a hybrid list, having the majority mechanized with a dash of footslogging and static gun enplacements. I've pretty much worked out the mechanized and footslogging platoon out, but I'm stuck on what to choose for my heavy support aside from two Demolishers. My first thoughts were Griffons, as they easilly throw down semi-accurate templates onto the board and cover my Chimera advance. But I was also thinking of using Hydras for some anti-speeder/bike capability. However, my platoon and Sentinels already have autcannons, so it just might be redundant taking Hydras.

My second thought is what kind of appearance my IG should have. I'm planning on leaving the shoulder pads off and either cutting off the excess on the helmet, or using different heads altogether. I'm not real sure if I want greatcoats or not; I suppose it depends on the fluff I'm making for the army and/or the theme of the gameboard I'm assembling. I've considered using the Steel Legion minis, but they're not worth the extra money I'm throwing at GW for them, plus, I'd have to do some converting, thinning my wallet out even more. Any ideas on the infantry?

As for the vehicles, I think I'm painting them grey, or maybe some tan/green/brown camo they used back then. Again, it depends on the fluff and the gameboard. I have some neat ideas for combining WWII models with GW models, especially artillery. Any thoughts?

Sorry this post is so large! I just have a lot of things to say!

Personally I like the Stormlord the best. If for nothing else than the Vulcan heavy bolter. As well as the ability to place many troops safely inside. :)

I would guess the baneblade is the most balanced of them all. I don't really know for sure. I don't have any of the books. :-P

Good morning!

I wish to start an IG force, though no stranger to 40k, this will be my first attempt at IG.

I plan to make lists at 250/500/750/1000/1250/1500/1750/2000pts, and I'm aiming for the typical stoic gun line though I'm interested in adding some mounted choices.

I tend to play, at my local GW store and such, against all races of 40k.

Forgive me, if this post becomes long, as I'm going to ask everything that's on my mind...

HQ :

1. How would you go about in building a CCS for a mostly stoic list?

2. Which regimental advisors should I take?

3. What are your opinions on the lord commissar, and how many commissars should I have in my force?

4. Do psykers bring anything to a IG force, and how many techpriests should I have in my list?

Elites :

1. What are your opinions on ogryn and ratling squads? I really like to add some snipers and I do like the idea of having some CC troops.

2. Psyker battle squad? That's a question in itself.

3. How useful are storm troopers, and how would you use them in my force idea?

4. I wasn't aiming to use characters in my list, but I like guardsman marbo. How can I use him to great affect?

Troops :

1. How would I gear my infantry platoons?

2. Should I take heavy/special weapon squads? If so, which types?

3. What of conscripts and penal legion squads? Useful or not?

4. Should I take veteran squads? If so, how to gear them?

Fast Attack :

1. I do like the idea of rough rider squads, and would like to include at least one. Has anyone used them, what did you use them for, and how well have they worked?

2. I like the idea of a hellhound/devil dog/bane wolf squadron, being a mobile anti-troop choice. Your opinions?

3. What really got me hooked on IG, was the valkyrie/vendetta. Warplanes is one hobby of mine, so I have to get those models. So I like the idea of transporting troops, but also like the the idea of aircraft strafing the battlefield. Your suggestions?

Heavy Support :

I'm only interested in the leman russ tank variants and the basilisk. What are your suggestions/opinions on filling up my 3 slots?

Thanks to anyone, who read my post, and all suggestions/opinions are welcome.

Yes, Kroot. As far as I know, the Kroot Mercenaries list is still legal and can be allied with any army that isn't Space Marines, Necrons, Sisters of Battle, Tau or Tyranids. Standard options apply, 0-1 HQ, 0-1 Elites, 0-1 Fast Attack, 0-1 Heavy and 0-2 Troops. Our beloved bird friends could potentially fill a lot of gaps in an otherwise strong IG army.

Kroot Mercenaries is a list renowned for being able to achieve a whole load of first turn assaults; combining Infiltrate with Jump Pack movement or 2D6 Fleet on most units. Let's have a look at what you get with your standard Kroot, for 8 points:

WS4, S4, I3 and 3 attacks on the charge.
BS3 and a Kroot Rifle (24" S4 AP6 Rapid Fire)

They're not very durable, with T3 and a 6+ save, but you can Infiltrate so use that cover to your advantage. If you've got any jungle or woods, that's a 3+ cover save. On the charge they can definitely dish out some hurt. Don't forget Eviscerators on the squad leaders for some extra pain.

The real winner however is the Kroot Hound Pack. In addition to 10-20 regular Kroot you can have 5-20 Kroot Hounds attached. At 6 points each, they lose the gun but have an extra point of Initiative and Attack. If a unit flees from the combat, they take an automatic S4 hit for each Kroot Hound model.

Example unit
Kroot Hound Pack 231pts
9 Kroot, 1 Kroot Shaper w/ Eviscerator, Surefoot Charm, Blood of the Stalker
10 Kroot Hounds
Hyperactive Nymune Organ upgrade

This unit can Infiltrate D6 closer than normal (12"-17" in plain sight) and has a 2D6 Fleet move. Unless you roll triple 1's, that's a first turn assault. You get:
27 S4 attacks at I3
30 S4 attacks at I4
4 S8 attacks at I1

Dirty tricks
How about using a Priest, to get re-rolls to hit? Or having Straken nearby for S5 I4/S5 I5 attacks? If you ditch the Surefoot, Stalker and Hyperactive upgrades you can still Infiltrate normally but no longer Fleet, but the unit only costs 186pts. You could attach a Commissar and Outflank the whole lot. If you combine the Master Shaper's Kroothawk Totem (re-roll dice to determine who gets first turn) with the Emperor's Tarot, you'd be almost guaranteed the first turn.

Uses in the Imperial Guard
Provide some much needed counter-attack in a Chimera-based mechanised list.
Use first turn assaults to hold up threatening long-range units, artillery, Devastators, Obliterators, etc.
Great for getting rid of objective camping stealth units like Scouts or Eldar Rangers.
Support an outflank-heavy force full of Valkyries.
Add some close-combat punch to pretty much any IG army.

Anyway, I'll stop ranting. What do other people think of this?

"One of the more inspirational sights for the loyal servants of the Emperor will be the sight of a magnificent Leman Russ Battle Tank spearheading the advancement of the Imperial line.

"One of the more inspirational sights for the loyal servants of the Emperor will be the sight of a magnificent Leman Russ Battle Tank spearheading the advancement of the Imperial line. These monstrous behemoths, each one a veritable fortress in its own right, is loaded with firepower from even the most basic of patterns. These patterns include the standard battle tank with its large, anti-infantry main gun; the greatly feared Demolisher, armed with a demolisher siege cannon for breaking through formations and plasteel walls alike; and the rare Executioner pattern. The Executioner is a deadly variant, able to spew out massive gouts of plasma at the advancing enemy, far larger than that of a regular plasma gun.

But this is not all these behemoths are armed with. Get too close and you may feel the wrath of a promethium fuelled heavy flamer mounted directly into the hull or feel the zip of the heavy bolter rounds as they fly from the side mounted sponsons. Truly it is one of the great behemoths of the battlefield and one of the Imperium's finest creations."

So, this week we have the LRBT to discuss. The thing I'd like to know most is which variants people use the most, or would like to use if there were a plastic kit for it. My personal favourites are the Executioner and Demolisher, though secondary weapons can vary. I currently Only own one, but I do aim to get a few standard LRBTs in the future (along with a whole other list of stuff that can probably wait for now. Suffice to say it includes a super heavy!).

P.S. I'd also like to apologise for the infrequency with which I've posted these threads, work has got the better of me recently and it's been a struggle to find time.
I am thinking of maybe doing a Guard army, and firstly i really like the look of Tallarn stuff....especially the FW models, so want to do at least one Tallarn Platoon....
But my first problem is, how would you make a Tallarn comand squad?
So i thought, to make it seem more plausable, i would have to use Cadians (i don't like Catachans...) leading/fighting with the Tallarn, and maybe make them a bit more desertish....
But i want to do a compeitive Guard list, so i thought Mech.... the Tallarn don't have to be part of the competitive list, i'm not sure if they would really be worth it, as far as i know, competitive Guard would be more Mech, so i wouldn't have loads of pionts to spend on troops....
Any advie,
Either on Tallarn
or competitive Guard would be really great, Thanks :D

Tonight I played my usual Friday night tournament-style game and against the wishes of everyone around, I rolled three Russes (just straight-up battle cannons, hull lascannons and heavy bolter sponsons) in a squad just to see what the downside was. The answer was THERE WASN'T ONE! In addition, I also had three Basilisks in an ordnance battery chilling on the edge of my original deployment zone. One bad scatter from one of these bad boys was the only thing that even came close to harming the Russ squad. They charged toward the Traitor IG with panache and style, and dispensed some punishment fit only for ungrateful and selfish subjects of the Emperor. They destroyed every enemy vehicle, and anything that wasn't powered by heretic zeal and it's own two feet. During the last turn, with the traitor IG army in shambles, offering only small pockets of resistance, these brave three Russes parked deep in the enemy deployment zone.

Now I wil admit (only because I feel like it) that I was very lucky, my dice were on thier game tonight. But I want it to be noted that it CAN be done, and it probably SHOULD. So stop being unfair to the Leamn Russ Squadron, LO. Tanks need love too.
