Bit of background first - my brother and I live at opposite ends of the UK but we've decided to embark on a joint army project (which may/may not get posted on here as we progress!). The plan we went for was

1) Choose a race that "fits" a huge number of points. e.g. Orks, Nids, Necrons - these all feel & look good when arrayed on the tabletop in vast numbers. We settled on Tyranids.

2) Pick a colour scheme.

3) Choose & build up seperate armies, where each of our armies are "game legal" so we can use them independently, but because they are painted the same they can be amalgamated into one for use in larger games. What we had in mind is using one of our existing 1500pts armies in a defensive game vs 3000 or 4000 pts of nids for a fun, themed game.

Trouble is... I don't know where to start! I'm holding off on buying a codex until the new one is released so I'm not even 100% on force organisation.

I've read the stickies and a few other posts etc. but they seem to be incomplete and maybe out of date. I've got some questions about army composition & tactics etc., mainly based around my preference to build an army that looks good and fits my theme rather than be cheesy on the tabletop. I don't want it to suck, but I'm not powergaming.

So...

Hive Tyrant. I like the model for this so will probably get one. My question is do I make a CC beast or ranged? I'm assuming the Tyrant guard are pretty much essential otherwise it will be sniped to pieces from the other side of the map? How many guard would you recommened? I don't really like the look of wings on it (far too big and unbalanced model-wise).

Other HQ choices - any need to take more than one HQ and if so what would you recommend?

Warriors - I like the idea of a few of these sheperherding the little guys around but are they any good?

Lictors - LOVE the idea of these but my fear is they will just get splatted being so far forward alone and unsupported. How true is this?

Troops - although my heart screams to get as many max-size units of hormagaunts as possible and just charge forward, realistically I'm thinking of 3x24 Hormagaunt broods. I don't much like Termagents but are they any good?

Gargoyles and Raveners are going to be added, I like the models :)

Heavies - this is where I won't know where to stop. A CC Carnifex is a must, as is one with venom cannon, but do they last long enough to be useful? For instance I cant see the CC fex getting into combat without being slapped before he hits their lines. Are Barbed Stranglers worth bothering with? Zoanthropes look interesting, but much like a "glass cannon", and again a target of long range sniping. Finally, the biovore - the concept of having three of these sitting at the back lobbing spore mines around is appealing, but are they worth the points?

Any and all advice for how to start a nid army would be appreciated :)

What is your favourite Tyranid? For whatever reason vote above and if you want say why you like that bug above all others. How good it is in the game, you love the model or is it easy to convert? Or tell us why you like another that is not listed there.

Hey Everyone.

I've been toying with the idea of getting into Tyranid sometime soon, so I was cruising Ebay for some cheap Tyranid lots.

I found this auction right here (which is currently ended, not sure if it will show up)
Warhammer 40k Tyrandid bitz, red terro, genestealers - eBay (item 270481062630 end time Nov-12-09 22:12:57 PST)

In case you can't read it, this is what the description read.
"Probably a good example of what happens when someone buys a bunch of models and doesn't know what they should look like.) I think all of the Red Terror is here, parts of two lictors but not quite a full one, a couple of ravenors, 3 gargoyles, a big assortment of oddly assembled warriors, some rippers and spore mines, and a pile of badly painted old genestealers.
Not pretty. Your chance to turn it into something better."

Not sure how much that was worth, but I'm guessing $22 + $5 shipping would've been a pretty good deal, even though some of the Tyranid are old and appear to be missing parts, so it woulda needed some lovin'.

Main reason I didn't get it is because I realized my auction prices were quickly adding up. I kinda regret it, but at the same time I'm trying not to spend too much money right now.
