Daelrog and Steamtankdriver's Arena Background Fluff

Hi there folks. Daelrog and I have been hard at work trying to do what has been talked about for ages...come up with an arena backstory and location that writers can use when coming up with fluff, both character and setting. We hope this will encourage a more unified arena theme for all the write-ups and we encourage people to PM us characters they would like to see used in the backstory as it expands. This is currently a work in progress and we will be updating it through the format (narrative) that I have included below. Anyone writing an arena can feel free, and is encouraged, to use our setting, timeline, characters, or anything else they wish while coming up with their narrative. We hope to see several arenas set in the port of Libris in the future. Until then, keep on the lookout for more fluff as Daelrog and myself expand it. We're using this initial post as a litmus test for the response and interest in this backstory.

    Cheers.
    -Tom

    THE HISTORY OF LIBRIS PORT:
    CHAPTER 1

“My name is Finnius Morrow and I’ve a tale to tell.

The archivists and scribes would have you believe that Libris Port was bought in trader’s coin by the first Lord Governor and raised under the flag of the Empire. Frankly, that’s bullshit. We paid for every inch of this city in the blood of good men and the first flag to ever grace our battlements warn’t no Altdorf cross, but you won’t find no mention o’ that in the history books. Most of the folks around here view time as…fluid. It’s a regular case of temporal myopia we’ve come down with and it don’t look like we’ll be shaking it anytime soon. ‘Sides, if’n you’re smart, you’ll let sleeping dogs lie lest you like the feel o’ steel betwixt your ribs.

    I thought not.

As I war sayin’, Libris used to be a pirate’s cove, used for stocking the ships and laying low after a big haul. Way I see it, things ain’t changed much. The brigands just get stipends now. Anyway, about forty years back, some highfalutin’ paladin prances through the gates and claims that he’s there to cleanse the city of the evil that’s been taintin’ it. Arrogant bastard catches an arrow in the heart not three seconds after the words’re off ‘is lips. That’s that; end o’ story. Right?

Wrong. Turns out, he’s the son of some big-shot fief lord or something. Some dolt with delusions of royalty and the connections to match. Next thing you know, every damn knight in the Empire is knockin’ at the gate and bayin’ for blood. Well, if’n you know pirates, you’ll know that we didn’t take too kindly to this and, one decapitated emissary later, it’s turned into a full blown siege.

One whole year they held out. Through fire and starvation they kept themselves going through winter with only a few brave souls bringing supplies into the city. Not by the main routes mind you, the Empire blockaded the port three weeks into the siege and they never let one ship out…naw, these were the secret channels. The dark places between the rocks where many a seafaring man’s gone and ain’t never come back from. We lost four or five ships that month alone. Folks around here took to sayin’ that there might be somethin’ in that jagged dark. A blood drinker preyin’ on our intrepid crews, strippin’ them o’ their humanity in anticipation o’ the day Libris was weak. Ain’t nothin’ ever come out o’ that though. Shoot, me, I think they wised up and got the hell out. Left us to the knights. ‘Swhat I woulda’ done.

Although…Edgar Holt’s ship did float into the bay one evening, and call me a liar, but he warn’t aboard. Man loved that ship like his own child. Hmmm.

But I’m digressin’. They held out for a bleedin’ year, coffers and vittles dwindlin’ to nothing, until finally, Jerald Barstow, acting as our own emissary, rides out to negotiate a truce. Got hisself sent back in three pieces. Apparently, even Empire dregs know the meanin’ o’ irony.

After that we kinda’ settled in for the worst. Most of us had already come to terms with the thought o’ dyin’ in front o’ our children with the black cross still smokin’ in our bellies. Didn’t matter to us anymore. We hunkered down and waited for the end. Only, it didn’t come.

Next morning, Din’s got the bleedin’ gate hauled open and he’s just escorting the damn Empire troops into the city like they was his long lost brothers! I mean, I know Din. He’s a man o’ the cloth alright, and a nice one to boot, but he warn’t openin’ no gates unless it was Moor hisself standing outside. Now, I’m not one to propagate rumors but, word is, the order to let em’ in was passed down from You Know Who herself. Nerathasal. Not saying I believe in Her, but, if’n it is true, not saying I blame Din. Folks around here’ll tell you stories about Her that’ll chill yer’ bones. Somethin’ about eatin’ Bruggit Gobmuncha in midday in front o’ his whole army and then lightin’ his mount on fire to boot!

If’n you believe in that sort of thing.

Ah, so that's where this project went!

I know AFG was keen to do something like this... I was keen to help out as well. There was a social group, seven or eight of us, all keen to work on something like this, and I'm sure we'd be willing to help/contribute to this if you want/need us.

I wrote a few pieces that I offered for use as part of a unified arena setup, and I can link you to them if you're interested. Or did I put all my entries up in my blog? I think the cave arena concept I had is in there, and I suppose this could be adapted somehow... Underneath the city, perhaps?

If I have a bit more time tomorrow, I might go through my stuff and PM you (or post here) with whatever I have to offer.

Hope this all makes sense and doesn't seem to brusque, I'm just rushing because I have to go soon!

The more the merrier! Send me all the stuff you have (as everyone is encouraged to do) and as a group we'll get an all encompassing backstory going. Daelrog and I just wanted to get the groundwork out there so that this didn't get trapped in theory.

    Cheers!

So, I've sent a PM through to you, SteamTankDriver, although I'm not sure why I'm telling you as the notification in your control panel will probably alert you to it sufficiently.

Feel free to pass it on to Daelrog, and let me know if I can do anything more to help build Libris Port!

That looks very promising so far.
Personally, I have been tinkering with an Albion setting, but with a little adaptation I can bring it into line with the Libris Port story.
Basically the premise of mine was based of the work of both yourself and Daelrog - or at least the style of battles (roving battles instead of a sedentary arena) with the battles taking place at focal points around the island (standing stones, crossroads etc) and each battle witnessed by a stern, mysterious elderly man and his unfortunate (and oft unwilling) companion - who has been selected to witness the events and begin training as the next 'chronicler'. I see them as a sort of mix between the Keepers from the Thief games and the druids from the Shanara series.
Anyway, I digress, I look forward to seeing where this goes. Still, if you are looking for additional authors (or even some random ideas) I would like to offer my meagre services.

We're always looking for suggestions, ideas, stories, or anything else that anyone would like to throw at us that we can adapt (which we try to do with as much of the original material intact as possible) into the origins of Libris Port. Anything is welcome, including critique or ideas for either Daelrog or myself as this is very much a joint effort between the two of us and anyone who wishes to contribute. Much obliged.

    Cheers,
    Tom
