hmmm, looking at what you want i cant help but feel skaven are just right for you, there magic is fun and they do have some very nice monsters add to that their choice of warmachines. they are a horde army though but they do have a decent chance of striking first, they are also clearly evil owing to the fact that it takes a bit of an effort just to work with each other.
aside from skaven i think ogre might be worth a look at they also tend to be fun to play but are one of two armies that are classed as netural but if not these two i think dark elves might be worth a look at, from what i have seen of them they have got monsters including dragons their magic is ok and they are elves so combat is not an issue.

I see where your comming from with Skaven, comical, evil, and by looks of it some nice magic, models are beautiful also. Giant rats always good. They truly are a horde army as well, 20-30 models in a blister.

Never really thought of Ogres, just don't think will be overly fond of them, seen the models and wasn't overly impressed. Not to say they are not good but not for me. Dark elves always a possibility, lore wise I do love them. Cold ones are awesome, but I believe their stupidity rule can make them useless with bad dice rolls.

I'm kind of drawn at the moment between 4 armies.

Tombs (Undead love, I believe they also require tactics which I enjoy, but can be quite difficult. From what I understand General leads and Heiro runs around, hiding and casting spells. Stunning models, Ushabti (sp?) Chariots, the Queen)
VC's (They have undead, dragons, monsters, non shiny vamps, plus some rich lore. Nagash and the Von Carsteins, plus some of thei rmodels are stunning. Only issue being my mate having started to collect them, but as I said he has 3 other armies so not too much of an issue)
Delves (As mentioned above love the lore, cold ones and so on)
Skaven (As mentioned above do look quite fun, my only concern is going full time student I would hate to end up spending ££££ just to outfit the army, but then again most armies appea to be that way.)

Annoyingly the GW site just went down. Not that its useful to learn about the units as such.

Any further advice would be appreciated, but i will certainly say thank yoiu Vulcan for the advice.

i only really have experiance with skaven and a bit with tomb kings. skaven are fairly cheep to start all you really need is a battlion box or two and a lords choice. tomb kings are nice being the only army that can use chariots. as for cost, that is one reason that ogres are good, they need only a few models to make a 1000 point army, in some cases this can be as little as 10. however with skaven you only need about £160 to get a good sized army going, two battlion box sets, army book and a general

I won't lie, I have been looking over and re-reading the Skaven models and playstyle and it sounds...fun. Sending in slaves, poisening them using them as bait as your rat ogres and abomination charge into flanks. Huge doomwheel to zoom around with, ability to shoot into your own troops to kill. Seems to be some nasty magic too. The models are nice as well once you properly look at them, Clans and Stormvermin are awesome. The ability to take Thanquol and Boneripper as well is a boost (loved them in Gortek and Felix, and their own novels)

I think I was drawn to Dark elves due to just gazing at the black dragon with Lord model, which is stunning. Plus the manticore, harpies, Hydra's, cold ones would lead me to some form of monster build, but I have read up a bit more and the dragons appear to be a waste of points, the Hydra does have a lot of attacks, but cold ones stupidity can be a let down.

I am a bit worried the low leadership of the Skaven, for a complete novice, may be a bit difficult to master at the start. But I do like a challenge. Plus with Skaven I can get the box set which has a wee preset army, the rule book, dice and all that which for a novice is perfect.

the low leadership is easy enough to avoid, leadership plus rank bonus of 3+ equals high leadership skaven, just make sure you have a hero or lord in there to make it higher

Thank you for all the advice Vulkan, I never even thought of Skaven till your reply and now they are certainly one of the ones I am going to go for. I of course now need to work out what points my mates play with and then look up advice on Army lists. Will start with the Isle of Blood and work from there.

I understand Screaming bell+Grey seer are staple hero set up, plus a warlord or warlock. But this isn't the place to discuss. I have chosen my army, just need to wait till friday and pay day.

your welcome, if you want to use the gray seer bell you need to play at least 2k games owing to the points cost, that said the bell kit is great and you get a plague monk in it

Aye I read that, it comes into about 500-600 points which is quite a lot for a low level game. Need to figure out how I am looking to play them, I have read up could do a Moldar army with rat ogres, Abom and the like, Skyre with engineers and WLC's....

Oh joys this is going to take me a while to figure out.

    Hello!

After about a 10 year break from playing Warhammer I am itching to play again; I should say I am acting on that itch now. I did try to build a Chaos army right before the mortal/deamon split, and ended up frustrating, selling off most of my Chaos stuff. I apologize for the length in advance.

Anyway, I'm back and looking to play! I found a few friends in another hobby that play. So here is my dilemma, what to play?

When I started WHFB I played O&G, who were pretty random at times but during the age of Herohammer I didn't have much of a problem. Then I switched to dwarfs, which I had much better luck because the army was built better, and, well, dwarfs are usually always a pretty strong army from what I recall.

So what I liked about playing both armies, and what I think I enjoy when playing tactical and other class/faction based games:

Infantry or big blocks - I don't know what it is, but I love using infantry or big units (flying, calv. etc...). Both my dwarf and O&G armies I played had lots of infantry. I like rolling all those dice.

Specialization - I like specializing or theming in tactics games and when I play MMO's or even roleplaying games like D&D (My character is heavily themed in frost, being from a fey court associated with Winter). For instance, an army themed around a certain magic school or around being highly mobile. Not that mobility is my preferred theme, but an army where I can specialize or theme in an aspect while remaining somewhat competitive is ideal. A mixture of a varied backstory and diverse list (I guess) would be ideal.

Randomness/Redundancy - I sort of enjoy a bit of randomness, such as in the O&G army, but I also want an army that has some redundancy available in case things go awry. I don't want my army to be screwed if one unit is destroyed or ran off the board. I guess I am trying to say no one trick ponies; more fragile armies are fine as long as victory doesn't hinge on one or two units or characters. I'm speaking theoretically, obviously an expensive, powerful wizard that fails to perform during an entire game may tip the scales in my opponents favor but in theory if he were to die it wouldn't destroy my chances. Hopefully that makes sense.

Those three points are pretty important to my play style, although I have to say remaining somewhat competitive is enjoyable. Ideally, I will pick an army that is somewhat competitive, I like being challenged and not just playing the FoTM.

So, again sorry for the length, I would like some suggestions to armies. I have some old O&G and dwarf models but would definitely consider other armies.

Right now I'm considering O&G again or Lizardmen, but I am more than open to suggestions. I would like to avoid Daemons, Chaos Mortals, OK, Bret, and HE due to dislike of models, army list or they are already being played.

    Thanks!

I'm considering picking up a fantasy army as a diversion from 40k, but I'm torn between a few of them, mainly Lizardmen, Dwarves, HE, WE and Bretonnia. In 40k I have a BA army, IG army and about to get my part of 2 sets of Dark Vengeance. So I'm really more interested in something that's not red or horde :p I do have a few O&G models from way back when I first started playing (A few doomdivers and some fanatics! Digging the idea behind them )

    Reasoning:

Bretonnia: I dig the models and the theme they represent, but as far as I can understand, they have a weak rulebook as it stands now, and I'm don't really want to start an army that's going to struggle from the get-go.

Lizardmen: The very first WD I bought was the issue where they were introduced, and thus are special to me.

High Elves: Looks pretty straightforward to paint, with a few interesting models.

Wood Elves: Really digging the theme and lore here, as well as the miniatures. However, I've come to understand that they're one of the more difficult armies to get to grips with.

Do any of these armies have more than one build that's fun and challenging (for both sides)? Are they one trick ponies that excell at one thing, but get massacred once they leave that comfort zone?
